How Aussies can get health insurance for less than a cup of coffee a day

It’s no secret that health insurance premiums* in Australia are on the rise and, if you don’t make sure you’re getting the best deal, you could be throwing away hundreds of dollars every year on cover that’s not customised to your needs*.

You could already be paying up to $167 more per year* for your health insurance, and that’s just for those of you who are NOT with one of the ‘Big Five’ health insurers—think BUPA, Medibank, HCF, nib and HBF.

If you are with one of the ‘Big Five’, you could be paying up to $194 per year* for the same cover you currently have.

That’s why it’s so important to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

Luckily, eligible Australians have access to some of the most wallet-friendly health insurance* available anywhere in the world – from just $3.22 a day for combined hospital and extras cover*.

That’s cheaper than a cup of coffee! But more importantly, it’s thanks to a government rebate* that can make a huge difference in your annual finances.

As I had to cancel my private cover years because of the expense, these occurrences don't impact me.

$3.22 a day sounds cheap but when you work it out it amounts to around $45 per fortnight and if you are just scraping by on an age pension this is a lot of money
Plus the fact that when you do apply for cover they ask if you have cover st the moment and if the answer is no they just do not want to know you , some even hang up on you .

All very well but what you don't say is that if the person who is applying for cover do's not have cover to swap then there is a 12 month waiting time for some items on the lists . So where is the big saving !!!

That amount would give you very little cover, as you would find when you go to claim ,you will not. Be covered for some procedures,as others have discovered. Being
On a pension it takes a lot of saving as I pay yearly , and would not be without the cover , I am happy with Bupa as I recently had heart surgery and was not out of pocket, and they are. Also covering my 12 course heart rehab. Where other funds it is only10 . Can’t complain about that .

So, not being particularly happy with my extras in my current plan, I used a comparison site. They came back with a plan that in the surface looked good, cost $25 pm less- but on closer comparison, would have left me out of pocket far more - for a lot less extras.
Then I realised that as I was no longer in a full time job, we were still on a lower rebate (8%) instead of 24%. This simple adjustment saved us $720 pa 😳
And be wary of those 60% back offers … for 3 x scale & polish at the dentist I would have been out of pocket $303, not the $116 I currently pay 🙄
H&C insurance next ….

With the help of the resident nurse at my GP's I found out how to cut down waiting time for the knee replacements.
At her suggestion, instead of waiting for the hospital orthopaedic surgeon, I paid for one visit with a surgeon, recommended by my GP, who does private as well as public hospital work. It wasn't a fortune and certainly more economical than private cover, for which there would have been a waiting period anyhow.
It seems most of the wait is because of the backlog of people needing consultations with a hospital specialist.
Anyhow, I paid the $200 odd, got X-rays on Medicare and 2 months later was booked in. 6 months later, another visit, then I was in for the 2nd knee.
I'm not saying it would be the same for everyone, but the way things were for me at the time, anything would have been better than another year of pain and misery. I am so glad I trusted the guidance offered at my GP's office.

Who can afford a minimum of $1400 a year for health insurance that doesn’t give you much anyway?
with everything going up all the time private health insurance is oneof the first things to be dumped.

As I had to cancel my private cover years because of the expense, these occurrences don't impact me.
I'll follow in hot pursuit.... strange that the pitiful increase in the pension comes about BEFORE the prices increase in April. if prices increase by more than the increase in the pension I will have no alternative but to cancel my private health...

Who on an age pension has $3.22 a day to spend on coffee every day ! That amounts to almost $100 a month if you follow this annoying ad ! If you are healthy you might never use it !
If you need emergency treatment there is the public hospital, not your own room but you get treated which is the main thing. My late husband had numerous problems, brain anyurism, vascular, triple heart bypass. He was treated very well in the public system. COPD got him in the end.

I have private health cover (it's not insurance). I personally believe the money paid to subsidise private cover ($33+ billion out of the $85 billion health budget) should be put into the public health system. Those that can afford private coverage pay will still pay to be treated in a private hospital.
