Hotelier reveals the 'dirty' and 'unsafe' things you should avoid when staying in a hotel

Aussies are travelling more frequently these days, which also suggests that tourism-related businesses like hotels and restaurants are once more thriving and in demand.
Whenever we travel somewhere, our hotel room becomes a place where we can be alone and take a break. Even though you may think of it as your 'home away from home', try not to get too comfy in that hotel room.
Hotel rooms, which are supposed to be private retreats, are actually shared by hundreds of strangers every year. And when so many people use and share the same space, some nasty stuff will inevitably be left behind and passed on to the next person.
Regardless of where you stay, a hotelier advises you to avoid making these common mistakes that could turn your dream holiday trip into a nightmare.
After a traveller has checked into their hotel room, there are several things they should and should not do, hotel worker Evangeline said in a video that she posted on her TikTok account.

Not including the name of your travel companion when you reserve a room.
According to Evangeline, you should almost always add the names of your travel companion or any accompanying family members to the list of names in the room registration.
If you, the primary guest, are absent and the other person is locked out and goes to the front desk, they will not receive a room key or a pass because their name is not on the reservation.
In the event of an emergency, this might make a world of difference. At the end of the day, it's better to be safe than sorry!
Using the remote control without cleaning it thoroughly.
When Evangeline first enters a hotel room, the first thing she does is locate all of the remote controls and give them a thorough cleaning with disinfection wipes.
'I would never use the remote control without wiping it down first with my own disinfecting wipes. Your cleaning and my cleaning are different, you feel me?' she said in the clip.
Using the glasses provided in the room.
Aside from giving the remote controls in the room a thorough cleaning, Evangeline also mentioned that the drinking glasses leftover in the room must be properly washed as well.
Even though they have been 'cleaned' by the hotel staff prior to your visit, it's better to be safe and wash the glasses yourself before using them.
Making yourself comfortable on the bedspread.
Evangeline said she never sits and makes herself comfortable on the bedspread whenever she comes to visit any hotel room.
'That thing comes off the first minute I walk into the hotel,' said the hotelier.
According to her, the bedspreads in hotels are not washed very often and are only cleaned maybe once a year; therefore, she recommends that nobody sit or even lie down on top of them because they are not well kept.

Walking around on bare feet.
Evangeline claimed that she's always wearing her flip-flops, even when she is just walking around her room.
Even if the room is carpeted, she won't take the chance of walking barefoot on the surface since she doesn't want to get her feet dirty. She wears her thongs everywhere she goes, including in the shower.
'I would always have a pair of flip-flops on,' she said.
Using the washcloth to dry your face and body.
The washcloths provided in the hotel are another item that she stays away from when it comes to washing her face and body.
'This is something nobody mentions, but it's big for me,' she said. 'I will use a towel, but I will not use a washcloth. Hundreds, if not thousands of people have used that on their bodies, and they are not washed and sterilised.'
'Having that many people coming close contact with their body parts with a washcloth and putting it on me... no, I'm good.'
Saying your room number out loud at the front desk.
This piece of advice is less about your hygiene and more about keeping you safe while you're at the hotel. According to Evangeline, whenever she is by herself on a trip, she will never reveal her room number 'out loud' at the front desk of the hotel.
'If you notice, the front desk agent will write your room number on a piece of paper, and they'll circle it and direct you to the elevators. They don't say your room number out loud,' she said.
'At least they're not supposed to, and you shouldn't either.'
This seems to be done to protect the guests in case someone walks by, hears their room number, and then decides to break into their room.
You heard it here first, folks! These are just a few things you can do to make sure your holiday trip goes smoothly and safely. Have you thought of anything else that may be included on this list? Tell us about them in the comments!
