Hot tip: 4WD couple uses this gas canister trick to avoid inconvenience

When you're out on the open road, exploring the vast and beautiful landscapes of Australia, the last thing you want is to be caught off guard by an empty gas canister.

Jess and Luke, a couple who have taken to travelling around the country in their 4WD, know this situation all too well.

But they've come up with a clever trick that they've shared with fellow Aussies to help avoid this very inconvenience.

The space in a 4WD is precious, and for Jess and Luke, it only allows for one gas canister.

To prevent the unpleasant surprise of running out of gas, they've adopted a simple yet ingenious hot water trick to check their gas levels.

In a video that has captured the attention of many on social media, Luke demonstrated the trick by pouring hot water over the side of the gas canister.

He then used his hand to feel for a temperature change on the surface of the canister. The area where the gas level is will feel significantly colder to the touch after the hot water has been applied.

'Hot tip! If you want to know if your gas canister is empty, pour hot water on it, and where the gas is, it'll be freezing cold,' Jess narrated in the clip.

'Running out of gas is very inconvenient, so make sure you test it when you think it is getting low.'

This trick is a practical alternative to using a gas canister gauge, which is a device designed to latch onto the canister and display the gas level.

While the gauge is a handy tool, Jess and Luke's method is more accessible and doesn't require the purchase of an additional gadget.

Fire and Rescue New South Wales has even weighed in on the couple's trick, confirming that it is not only effective but also safe to use.

'This is an effective way to estimate the amount of gas remaining in the bottle which presents no danger, assuming that the bottle is in good condition and the hot water is handled carefully,' a spokesperson said.

After their demonstration, Jess and Luke discovered that their gas canister was indeed empty.

‘Yes, it’s empty,’ Jess said, with Luke's finger landing at the bottom of the canister when checking for the cold spot.

Yes been doing it for years. Had to show my girlfriend the trick last time we ran away with the grand kids and went camping for two week with no husband. Good weeks but my husband would drive out for tea every night.
