Horse-drawn bread deliveries

Back when supermarkets weren't a thing, bread came fresh from the local baker in his trusty horse and cart. I bet most of you can almost smell that warm, unsliced bread wrapped in waxed paper! And those bread rolls in the huge basket—what a sight!

Life indeed seemed so much more innocent, simpler, and slower back then. It's funny how technology and progress have transformed our lives, but there's something charming about those nostalgic times. Has anyone here had the pleasure of experiencing those bread deliveries in real life? I bet it was quite the treat!

Just following on from today's story of bread deliveries of bread by horse drawn carriages.....the same sort of thing applied to our milk deliveries if you remember, and who could forget the poor guy who we called the pan man who would come and retrieve our containers from the toilet with it carefully slung over his shoulder and then replace it with a new one for us.....oh my. Miss those days, don't you ?

Mum always kept old carrots or apples for me to feed the horses who pulled the bakers cart and the milk cart.
The bakery was on one side of the road and the horses were in a paddock and stables on the other side of the road but quite a long way down the road. The horses would be let out and they would wander up the road to the bakery and back themselves into the shafts of the cart waiting to be harnessed. Unfortunately our baker (Fred) had a massive heart attack and passed away as he was harnessing the horse. She refused to leave the cart until she had carried out her duties so the owner of the bakery had to take her out on her run so she could do her job. She was a beautiful animal and worked with another baker for many more years.

As a child I lived in England and we had a high cart with bread which the driver sat in front driving h is horse. We also had a local farmer who delivered milk. He had churns from which he would ladle the milk into whatever container we had to receive it. Unfortunately in the summer if you happened to be at the end of his run the milk would have turned sour before he got to you as his van was not refrigerated.

Not only the baker but also the milkman. Had to take a billy to the truck for the milkman to fill out of his milkcan. Postie came twice a day on a pushbike plus telegram boys.

My grandpa, though I never knew him, died before any of my siblings and I were born drove 2 different buggies but without the canopy for Golden Crust too. We have two sepia photos somewhere in the family showing both vehicles with different horses. He was also awarded an award for the years he worked for them- 25 years after years of manual work, breaking stone and making roads by hand.

Sure do remember. The milkman had the most beautiful clydesdale pulling his horse drawn carriage, however the milko never sat in the carriage. He always ran alongside the carriage & the horse stopped on its own for each delivery....cold milk & in glass bottles too. We also had the fresh fruit & vegies & breadman delivered the same way. Mum even had man who came around every 2nd saturday with a van full of womens clothing for sale, which you could purchase and then pay it off over time. He "Mr Faye" would have made a motsa with mum & us 6 girls buying our clothes over so many years. Strange, I still remember his name so easily.
