Home stylist transforms $25 Kmart lamp into TWO stylish wall sconces: "Best one I've seen yet!"

Living in an old home with stone or plaster walls, particularly one that was constructed decades ago, may frequently leave you scratching your head over how to decorate it, especially with all the built-in lighting fixtures.

Since it's difficult enough to hang a picture, let alone install new wiring for a light fixture, what other options do you have if you want to breathe a little more life into the space?

At first glance, the process of making your own light fixtures can seem to be quite intimidating. However, with a little imagination and a bit of electrical know-how, you can design the ideal DIY wall lamp to illuminate the dim corners of your home.

Here, an Aussie home stylist demonstrates how to transform a plain Kmart lamp into two stylish wall sconces that can be used without connecting to the main power source!

In a video posted on her Instagram page, Dina Santos from Brisbane revealed how to make stylish lamps using some remote-controlled puck lights and wall hanging strips.

"This transformation cost me $38 in total and was able to make two wall lamps," she said.

Here are the things she used:
  • Linear wood base table lamp from Kmart ($25 on clearance)
  • Two puck lights
  • Two thin wood strips cut to size
  • Hack saw
  • Sander or sandpaper
  • Liquid nails
  • Drill
  • 3M Command adhesive picture hanging strips

And here are the steps to follow: (There will be some woodworking involved, like sawing and drilling, so be careful folks!)

To start, carefully disassemble the lamp so that the wooden base is all that is left.

After that, cut the base in half along its length, and sand down the edges that are too rough. Following that, attach the two wooden strips using glue.

In order to let light through, drill a few holes in the top. After that, attach four hanging wall strips to the edges.

Then, take your puck lights and stick them to the wall where you want your sconces to go. Once the lights are properly secured on the wall, place the wooden lamp base over the top.

If you're concerned that the lamps' batteries will run out, the adhesive command strips will make it simple to remove the lamp base and replace the batteries as needed.

And there you have it – now you now have a pair of custom-made wooden wall scones that will breathe new life into your living space.

In the comments section of her Instagram post, dozens of Dina's followers left praises and commended her for a job well done. One user even asked her where she was getting all these "amazing" ideas!

"Best one I’ve seen yet! They look fantastic," added a second user, with a third chiming in, "Such a great idea. Looks so good!"

A fellow avid DIYer also asked her how long the puck lights usually last before replacing the batteries, to which Dina replied by saying, "I'm amazed at how long they last. I've had a light pendant with a puck light for about 2 months and it's on for about 20 minutes every day. I've only changed the batteries once."

To pass the time on a lazy Saturday or Sunday, try your hand at this easy DIY project. See you at Kmart, then?
