Hollywood icon undergoes emergency surgery following a frightening fall at home
One of Hollywood’s most iconic movie stars has been rushed to hospital to undergo emergency surgery following a terrible accident in the bathroom of her Swiss home.
Legendary film star Sophia Loren, 89, had multiple fractures in her hip and a serious fracture to her femur after the fall on Sunday.
Her self-titled restaurant chain confirmed the news on social media, saying: 'Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation.’
‘Thankfully, everything worked out for the best, and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery.'
Since she was admitted to the hospital, Sophia’s sons Carlo Jr., 55, and Edoardo, 50—from her marriage to late husband Carlo Ponti—have been at her bedside.
According to a source close to the actress, the result of the operation has led to ‘cautious optimism’, but the recovery will require a long rehabilitation.
As a result of this unfortunate turn of events, Sophia's upcoming engagements have had to be cancelled. This includes the opening of the fourth eatery in her namesake chain in the Italian city of Bari.
Sophia Loren, born Sofia Villani Scicolone—named one of the greatest stars of classical Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute earlier this year—is one of the last surviving major icons from the golden era.
She has graced us with critically lauded performances in films such as Two Women (1961), for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress—a first for an actress in a non-English speaking role.
Moreover, her performances in Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) and Marriage Italian Style (1964) are etched deeply in film history.
More recently, she featured in the 2020 Netflix film The Life Ahead, directed by her son Edoardo, for which she won a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress.

Despite her fame and success, the down-to-earth star has always maintained a humble attitude towards her work and popularity.
In an interview, she said: 'I love cinema so much. I want to keep doing it forever. I know it’s difficult to find good stories, but sometimes I fall in love with the right ones.’
‘I intend to make movies forever,' she added.
The actress celebrated her 89th birthday last week.
We pray for Sophia’s speedy recovery—and hope to see her back on the screen soon!
