Hidden Allergen Alert! Popular item urgently recalled from Dan Murphy's and BWS

For some of us, extra precaution is needed when purchasing certain food items. We don’t want to trigger any allergens, which can be life-threatening sometimes. If you need to be extra cautious about what you consume, you might want to check your cupboards for this popular beverage.

Recently, retailer Dan Murphy’s has warned customers of the potential presence of an undeclared allergen in 750ml bottles of 78 Degrees Distillery vermouth.

The products being urgently recalled include 78 Degrees Distillery’s Dry Vermouth, Rosso Vermouth and Rose Vermouth, all of which have been available through Dan Murphy’s outlets in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria, as well as BWS stores in South Australia and independent liquor stores around the country.

‘Consumers who have a sulphites allergy or intolerance should not consume this product and should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund,’ according to Food Standards Australia New Zealand.

The issue came to light after it was found that the vermouth products may not declare the presence of sulphites–which are known to cause an adverse reaction or allergic reaction in some consumers–on their labels.

As such, the company has taken the precautionary measure of recalling the products from shelves until further notice.

For more information, customers are encouraged to contact the distillery at 02-5133-7007 or visit the store’s website to learn more. As of writing, the three vermouth variants no longer appear in website searches.

What are Sulphites, and why can they be harmful?

In our quest to help seniors lead an informed, healthy, and joyful lifestyle, it's crucial to enlighten ourselves about sulphites.

They are sulphur-based compounds commonly used as a preservative in many food and beverage products, including alcoholic drinks. Their primary function is to maintain food freshness, prevent browning, and prolong shelf life. But you might be wondering–why all the hubbub about sulphites?

Well, the issue isn't the sulphites themselves but how our bodies may react to them. For seniors, especially those with pre-existing respiratory issues such as asthma, consuming sulphites can lead to breathing difficulty in some cases.

In extreme cases, reactions can also include skin rashes, stomach cramps, and even anaphylactic shock. For those with sulphite sensitivity or intolerance, the repercussions can be severe.

Additionally, folks dealing with liver or kidney problems might find them harder to metabolise, making sulphites a bit of a wildcard to toss into our internal chemical cocktail. Not to mention, with age, the digestion system changes, and sometimes, our capacity to break down certain compounds diminishes.

So, it's better to have an informed choice. Members, before you pop open that beverage bottle, get into the habit of studying the listed ingredients. It might just save you from an allergic shock.

I don't drink GRIPE WATER - wine is called that because the fans of it gripe if they don't have it! That said finally some company being responsible for peoples health though.

On those rare occasions that I purchase Vermouth, I choose Cinzano.
