Heartbreaking: Dave Hughes reveals tragic loss within his family

A few days ago, fans were shaken by the heart-wrenching news from a much-loved comedian and radio presenter.

Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes took to social media to announce the passing of his mother, Carmel, last Saturday, October 7.

'My angel mum Carmel passed away last night at home, surrounded by the love of her family. She has earnt the rest,' he wrote alongside a photo of his parents and son, Rafferty.

Last Friday, October 6, Hughesy shared the news on the Hughesy, Ed and Erin show that his mother had been hospitalised and was unlikely to wake up again.

'It's been a tough couple of weeks,' he said.

‘She’s still with us, but it won’t be long. She’s a beautiful woman who’s been a great matriarch of the family, and we’re all around her at the moment,’ Hughesy revealed, sharing that the family had 'been going through photos' to honour Carmel's life.

'Mum grew up in an orphanage, and there's a photo of her teaching a class with nuns looking over her…She had to leave the orphanage because she didn't want to be a teacher, so she left with nothing and went and became a nurse and met Dad.'

This tragedy was especially significant to Hughesy, who, unfortunately, lost his father, Des Hughes, in 2010 following a battle with cancer.

He also reflected on his mother's legacy during the radio segment: 'She's been a beautiful mother who really supports her children.’

‘Everyone goes through [losing their parents]...but the memories of all the sacrifice, and all the good times…She's done so well in her life. We'll miss her a lot. She's always been stoic and never complained,’ he added.

The comedian's post was met with an outpouring of support, with those commenting showing their love and support for him and his family.

‘Oh, Hugh. Your most brilliant, funny, wise and grounded ma. Baker of biscuits. Summer-up of situations. Farewell, beloved Carmen. She has jewels in her crown,’ radio and TV presenter Kate Langbroek wrote.

‘Big love to you all, mate. She raised a champion,’ television host Osher Günsberg commented on Hughes’ post.

Another television personality, Yvie Jones, said, ‘Oh Dave, I’m so sorry to hear this. Sending you all my love. To you and your family. Such a hard loss, our mums. I’m so sorry.’

Musician Eddie Perfect also offered his condolences, ‘That’s really sad news, Dave. So sorry to hear you lost your beautiful mum.’

You NEVER get over losing your mum. I lost my mum a couple of years ago and I can still see her lying in the hospital bed not knowing what was happening around her. Love her forever.
