Health experts raise crucial alert before Easter weekend kicks in

As the Easter weekend approaches, many Australians are looking forward to spending quality time with family and friends, indulging in chocolate eggs, and participating in festive activities.

However, amidst the excitement, there's an important warning that all Aussies, especially seniors, should heed.

A concerning report predicted that two in five Australian households could be grappling with illness after the Easter celebrations.

The 2025 Codral Cold and Flu Forecast, developed in collaboration with health consulting firm IQVIA, projects a 50 per cent increase in cold and flu cases after the long weekend.

This probability could affect up to 6.1 million Australians nationwide.

The Australian Medical Association's President, Dr Danielle McMullen, voiced her concerns about this report.

Dr McMullen stated that Australians could be on the cusp of a 'horror flu season'.

With the cooler months on the horizon, Dr McMullen's insights were particularly pertinent for seniors, who are more susceptible to influenza.

'We have seen nasty flu seasons in other parts of the world this year, particularly in the United States, making the potential for a horror flu season here in Australia much more likely,' Dr McMullen explained in an interview.

She emphasised that the flu can strike at any time but typically peaks from June to September.

Dr McMullen recommended that the best time to get vaccinated against flu is from April onwards.

This urgency has been underscored by 46,325 confirmed flu cases in Australia as of the end of last month.

These cases marked the highest number ever recorded during the first quarter of a year.

The cases followed a harrowing cold and flu season in 2024, which saw over 365,000 reported influenza cases and more than 4,200 hospital admissions—Australia's most severe flu season since 2019.

The flu and common cold, while often interchanged due to similar symptoms, are distinct viral infections.

Colds are typically milder and affect the nose and throat.

Symptoms like sore throat, sneezing, and coughing often characterise colds.

Influenza, on the other hand, is a highly contagious respiratory illness that could involve the nose, throat, and lungs.

Influenza could lead to serious complications, particularly towards seniors and those with pre-existing health conditions.

'Immunisation is truly the best form of defence against influenza, and people should get their flu shot each year,' Dr McMullen emphasised.

The flu vaccine should be updated annually to combat the most current strains.

With this in mind, it's crucial to book GP appointments as soon as possible to ensure timely vaccination.

GPs are well-equipped to administer vaccines safely, especially to vulnerable community members like seniors and children.

In addition to vaccination, practising good hygiene is vital in preventing the spread of colds, flu, and other illnesses.

Regular hand washing, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing, and prompt disposal of used tissues could reduce the risk of transmission.

Always clean common surfaces and avoid sharing personal items like cups and utensils.

As everyone prepares for the Easter festivities, always remember the importance of safeguarding everyone's health and well-being.

By taking proactive steps now, everyone can enjoy a holiday filled with joy and good health.
