He worked on Star Wars and Crocodile Hunter—and now the industry’s mourning a true master

The film industry is known for its dazzling premieres and red-carpet glamour—but behind every great production are the unsung heroes who make it all possible.

A recent loss has left a deep void in the hearts of many who’ve worked behind the scenes in Australia’s entertainment world.

What followed was an outpouring of tributes for a man whose quiet brilliance helped shape some of the country’s most iconic productions.

The Australian screen industry has been left reeling after the death of one of its most respected behind-the-scenes veterans.

Paul ‘Salty’ Brincat, a sound recordist whose work reached global heights, died in New South Wales in late May after a battle with a brain tumour.

His quiet genius earned him a place among the most trusted names in sound across Hollywood and local productions alike—but it was his humility that left the deepest impression on those who knew him.

A GoFundMe has since been launched by his family to assist with funeral costs. With a goal of $10,000, the fundraiser had already passed the halfway mark at the time of reporting.

‘It’s hard to understate the profound impact that Paul Brincat has had upon the Australian Film Industry,’ read the campaign’s page.

Salty’s name became synonymous with quality over a four-decade career, stretching from the early 1980s to as recently as last year. His final project was the 2024 Australian film The Nut Farm, which starred Madeleine West and Arj Barker.

Though many knew his name through the credits of blockbusters, few knew the depth of his experience. Brincat’s resume included Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, The Invisible Man, and Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course—but his accolades extended well beyond the big screen.

In 1999, he received an Academy Award nomination for The Thin Red Line, the haunting war drama directed by Terrence Malick and starring Sean Penn. Just a few years earlier, in 1996, he earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing on the US television series Flipper, which featured Neighbours alum Alan Dale.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in across social media.

‘I was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of one of our longstanding members. He was much loved,’ wrote the Australian Screen Sound Guild.

Another colleague, sound recordist Josh O’Donnell, added: ‘Vale Paul. Despite his formidable resume, I found that Salty was an extremely humble man, devoid of ego. I can honestly say that I would not be the man I am today without Salty.’

Cameraman Jason Binnie echoed the sentiment: ‘We have lost a legend.’

The industry is now preparing to farewell Paul, with his funeral set to be held on Saturday, 14 June in his hometown of Murwillumbah in regional New South Wales.

Those who knew him best have described the gathering as a heartfelt send-off.

‘For decades Salty was at the cutting edge of sound, recording dialogue for Hollywood blockbusters and independent Australian feature films alike,’ read the GoFundMe.

‘So it is with no surprise that so many of our extended film family are travelling from far and wide, to Murwillumbah, to pay homage to the great man himself.

‘With so many wonderful people in attendance, we have put together a small fundraiser, to help alleviate his family of some of the Behind the Scenes costs of the memorial.’

Paul Brincat may have worked in silence—but the legacy he leaves behind is thunderous.

While Paul ‘Salty’ Brincat often stayed out of the spotlight, his talent spoke volumes—especially in productions that earned top industry recognition.

If you appreciate the craft behind great cinema, this clip is well worth a watch.

If he was that well known and worked of films like this post is saying then why do they need to raise $10,000 through GoFundMe.
If the industry is preparing to farewell him which is today I'm sure they will pay for his funeral but I'm sure he wouldn't have been poor between those well known films !!

RIP 🙏 and my preys are with his family

Hi "SR",
Well Babe, someone has top pay for the 'El Flasho" coffin with gold plated handles, all of the flower tributes with over flowing white lillies, then all of the "Goodies" at an extraordinary well presented wake that will follow.
No doubt, 'Little Boys" wont be served with a petite party size sausage roll & double dipped tomato sauce.

It will be funeral fit for "Royalty".

It's all so the "Family" wont be out f pocket.

Ridiculous right !!

I was thinking the same thing myself. So sick of these GoFundMe posts.
Don't people have any pride these days, begging complete strangers for money for a funeral.
If the family can't afford a big slap up funeral have what you can afford.
Surely such a well respected person in his profession has enough funds in his estate to cover the cost.

A friend of ours dies suddenly 18 months ago aged 63. He came home from work not feeling well and layed down for a nap and never woke up.
She couldn't afford a big funeral and not something he would have wanted.
His coffin was plywood very simple. His surfboard leaned against his coffin and songs Sister Golden Hair by America and Bowies , Starman played

This was actually the most beautiful funeral I had been too and didn't cost her an arm and a leg.
He was cremated and his ashes taken out on his surfboard at Cronulla and scattered

My immediate thought was why would he need a go fund me page?
Presumably a well respected operative in his industry and as such would have been paid handsomely for his services.
I'm a firm believer in if you can't pay for something then you can't have it.
I'm also pretty sure that's not the sort of example the people who set up "Go Fund Me" had in mind when they started it but just in case I've got that wrong I'm off to start a page, I could do with a couple of grand to help with the groceries - any takers?!

Anything so they are not out of pocket & they don't lose anything from their inheritance. Money grubbers. If people donate more fool them.
When my husband passed last year, I had the dilemma of deciding what to do. He had always said he didn't want a "funeral" the only thing he wanted was to be buried with his daughter.
Unfortunately he never told anybody else this, nor did he leave a will, just to complicate m a tters further.
Out of respect for his family I decided on what was called "quiet time". His family usually had a large funeral.
The coffin was in the chapel where family and a few close friends gathered to remember him. I did go a bit overboard with the flowers but they were beautiful.
They played the song "It's Your World Now" by the Eagles. A song he loved and had chosen for his daughter's funeral.
His ashes were taken to SA where he is now with his daughter.
I have told my son I would like something similar. I don't want some over the top elaborate expensive funeral.

Well they have over $14k so far and funeral today, with caterers, shuttle buses to the property where the function is being held,
over the top , but sounds like they have plenty of coin anyway !

I need tyres, anyone spare $900 lol

Buy a Tesla.

All the fruitcakes say how wonderful they are. Run on the hoax known as renewable energy and renewable tyres.

Won't cost you a cent!!!

I wonder where the raw materials for tyres come from? FOSSIL fuels you climate change faggots!

When I cark it, I won't know or feel a thing.

Line up to have a kick in my guts. I don't care.
I don't know why you can't be buried in the back yard and we have 7.3 acres plenty of room for a burial and my hobby being woodwork I could make coffin before I go

my sentiments exactly. Seems to me everyone jumps on to the go me fund. One needs to be a squirrel at times like this.

I've only ever donated to a goFundMe page once .
My friends son was tragically killed in a motor bike accident maybe two years ago, on a Saturday on his way home from work. His wife was left with two young kids and a mortgage.
Their eldest daughter who was 4 at the time was going in for brain surgery which was costing heaps and not fully covered by Medicare. Her surgery was one week after her dads funeral and I'm happy to say it was successful. She has since had two more surgeries which they knew she would need.

Must say i have never heard of him but these behind the scenes people never get notice RIP Salty Brincat some Go fund me are genuine some are just pennny pinchers is not like the state will bury you or do they ?
