He is 'doing well’ but tour plans now in jeopardy–Music icon rushed to the hospital

When a beloved music legend experiences a sudden health emergency, fans around the world are left holding their breath—especially when it disrupts a major tour.

A recent incident involving one of the most influential guitarists of our time has sparked concern and speculation, with past events adding a layer of urgency to the situation.

What unfolded just hours before a highly anticipated performance has once again brought the artist’s health into the spotlight.

Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana was hospitalised on 22 April after falling ill ahead of a scheduled performance in Texas.

The 77-year-old musician had been preparing for a show at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio as part of his Oneness Tour 2025 when he experienced what his team later identified as dehydration.

His manager, Michael Vrionis, confirmed the health scare in a statement, revealing that Santana was placed under observation out of an abundance of caution.

‘Mr. Santana was at the [Majestic Theatre] preparing for tonight’s show when he experienced an event that was determined to be dehydration,’ Vrionis said.

‘Out of an abundance of caution and the health of Mr Santana, the decision to postpone the show was the most prudent course of action.’

Vrionis assured fans that Santana was ‘doing well and is looking forward to coming back to San Antonio soon as well as continuing his US Tour.’

The performance had been set for that evening but was postponed as medical personnel transported the guitarist by ambulance to a local hospital.

This was not the first time Santana had suffered a similar health issue on tour.

In July 2022, he collapsed on stage during a concert at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Michigan, which was also attributed to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

He had also cancelled a string of Las Vegas shows in December 2021 due to chest pains that led him to seek urgent medical care.

In a video later posted to social media: Santana recalled asking his wife to take him to the hospital after experiencing a worrying sensation in his chest.

He explained that he would be ‘taking time off for a little bit’ following surgery and wanted to regain his strength to perform at full capacity once again.

‘I wouldn’t show up unless I could do that,’ he said.

Santana urged fans with tickets to hold on to them as the San Antonio show would be rescheduled.

The Mexico-born artist rose to fame in the late 1960s and early ‘70s, earning widespread acclaim with his band Santana.

Their breakthrough came at the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Festival, where their performance of ‘Soul Sacrifice’ became iconic thanks to director Michael Wadleigh’s Woodstock documentary.

The group’s self-titled debut album was quickly followed by Abraxas in 1970, which included hits like ‘Oye Como Va’ and ‘Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen’—songs that remain fixtures in Santana’s live performances.

In the 1970s, he delved into jazz fusion and collaborated with acclaimed musicians including Alice Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, and Wayne Shorter.

Santana alternated between his Latin rock roots and jazz explorations through the 1980s before experiencing a massive commercial comeback in 1999 with the release of Supernatural.

The album featured several guest artists, most notably Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty on the hit single ‘Smooth,’ which spent 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite the success of Supernatural, Santana drew criticism in 2023 after delivering an anti-transgender speech at a concert in Atlantic City.

During the outburst, he said he was ‘like this with my brother Dave Chappelle,’ referencing the comedian known for similar controversial views.

Earlier that year, Santana shared in an interview that he had been sexually abused almost daily between the ages of 10 and 12.

He said he had since found it in his heart to forgive the man responsible: ‘Open your hands and let it go.’
