Grandma's Viral TikTok Rant on Babysitting Rules Sparks Outrage – See Why Everyone's Talking!

In the age of social media, it's not uncommon for family squabbles or generational differences to become public spectacle. This was certainly the case when a self-described Boomer grandmother, known as @pikynel on TikTok, decided to share her grievances with the world. Her video, which has since gone viral, features her reading through a list of instructions left by her daughter for babysitting her grandchildren. The clip, captioned with 'POV: Me reading the exhaustive instructions my daughter left me,' has sparked a heated debate among viewers, with many questioning the grandmother's attitude towards modern parenting.

The video begins with a touch of humor as the grandmother expresses her bewilderment at the detailed instructions, wondering how she ever managed to raise her own children without such guidance. 'And wondering how on earth I ever managed to raise my own three children. How did I do it,' she muses in the video. However, the tone quickly shifts as viewers realize that the grandmother's lightheartedness may be masking a deeper resistance to her daughter's parenting style.

The list in question, which the grandmother deemed excessive, actually contained practical information such as the children's sports schedules and other essential details a caregiver would need to know. This has led to a divide among TikTok users, with some siding with the grandmother's sentiment that the instructions were over the top, while others defended the mother's right to ensure her children's routine is maintained in her absence.

One user pointed out, 'You raised children 30 years ago grandma, lots has changed. None of my child's grandparents even know how to work the car seat,' highlighting the evolution of child-rearing practices and safety standards over the years. Another commenter, a fellow grandparent, offered a different perspective: 'Grandparents are support staff, not management. I am grateful for the clear instructions. I am there to help, not to undo schedules and cause chaos.'

The debate has brought to light the often delicate balance between respecting the autonomy of parents to raise their children as they see fit and the experience that grandparents bring to the table. It's a reminder that while grandparents can be invaluable sources of support, they also need to adapt to the changing dynamics of modern parenting.

Some viewers shared personal anecdotes that underscored the importance of detailed instructions, such as one mother who, due to unforeseen medical complications, was hospitalized for two weeks. Her mother was thankful for the thorough list she left for her 9-month-old baby. This story serves as a poignant example of why clear communication and preparation are crucial.

Despite the backlash, the grandmother did receive some support from others who preferred a more laid-back approach to babysitting. 'So glad my kids aren't high maintenance. They just drop the grandkid off and leave. No lists, no commentary on what we need to do,' commented one user, suggesting that there's a spectrum of preferences when it comes to grandparent involvement.

The conversation has also sparked a broader discussion about empathy and understanding between generations. Instead of airing grievances publicly, some suggest that a private conversation might be more productive. As one user reflected on their own experience, 'I did this to my mum too 15 years ago when my son was one, for three days. I found the instructions recently and laughed me head off. Just let her think you used it and give her grace.'

A grandmother should not be treated like a commercial child care centre, however, to keep the peace one needs to be tactical.
With so many rules thrown at her, I have to wonder why she resorted to TikTok instead of questioning it face to face with the list writer.
Having a routine when raising your kids is hardly unique. Inflicting your routine on someone else is something that needs a special kind of treatment.
On a personal level, I used to listen to instructions, unpack the myriad of containers, bottles and wrapped items, make sure there were no medical issues to be addressed, and, if it was just a normal babysitting visit, I disregarded most of the instructions completely and spent my time enjoying the company of the grand child whilst giving them lots of love, kisses, hugs and attention that helped them enjoy their visits. Nobody was any the wiser, and no children were lost in the process.

Just nod and smile folks. You've raised your own kids and they must've thought you did an ok job or they wouldn't be asking you to look after the grandies. I think most new parents these days do the same. I can never remember doing it when I asked my parents, but it does happen to me, so nod and smile 😃

Me and my wife have to babysit for our 2 grandsons next week for a few hours. We certainly won't be getting any instructions on how to look after them from our son and daughter in law.

The only 'instructions' I left for my mother to follow was if the kids needed any medication otherwise I respected that she knew what she was doing. If she was good enough to mind my children when needed then she was good enough to do it her way.

Stresses me out just thinking about it! It sure can be hard being a boomer & not understanding how things like the car seat work & so many other modern appliances (washing machines etc that are so space age comparedto my old get up in my home!)
So frustrating. 2 of my grandies are now old enough to show & help me with such crap thank goodness! One more grandy on the way, I shudder to think about how I'm gonna cope if left alone to baby sit. Love rules!

Damn, I really am one of the lucky grandparents out there. I look after my 2 youngest grandchildren every school holidays and even had them live with me throughout Covid lock down (I home schooled them) and when first asked to look after them, I asked my son what their rules were. His reply,"Just do whatever you did with me, I've turned perfectly out fine". Luckily I also get on wonderfully well with my D.I.L. and they both trust me to do the right thing by their children.

My kids never gave me instructions thank goodness. But l have a girlfriend who is so anxious caring for her grandson due to her daughters demands. I don't feel it's right. Yes we must respect things have changed since we were parents, but l don't think we need a lecture before caring for the grandkids.
Just enjoy each other.
Kind regards to all Vicki
