Grandma's secret revealed: A $35.99 Bunnings purchase that cleans the dirtiest carpets in just two minutes!

We’ve all had to deal with that type of carpet. You know the one. The one where it doesn’t matter how much time you spend vacuuming, the dirt, dust, lint, and goodness knows what else is still very much stuck in the carpet, meaning all your hard work vacuuming hardly makes a difference. But now, thanks to a clever tip one Aussie woman claims was inspired by her grandma, your carpet cleaning duties can be cut down significantly.
A woman recently shared on the Facebook group ‘Mums Who Clean’ how she bought a Bunnings Sabco Whisk Away Carpet Sweeper, which cost her just $35.99, and was able to clean her carpets in just two minutes - compared to the 45 minutes she used to spend cleaning her carpets.
‘The last time I vacuumed our bedroom it took 45 minutes and it hardly looked any different. I tried a rubber broom, but it was really hard going,’ she explained.
The woman explained that the Carpet Sweeper from Bunnings had transported her 'back in time to the 1950s' - the same time her grandmother had used it for her own carpets!
‘I remembered the contraption my Grandmother used to have for whizzing around on her floors. A quick Google and a trip to Bunnings and I bought this bad boy home and transported me back in time to the 1950s.’
The woman shared before-and-after photos of the cleaning job and included a photo of the dirt, dust, and fluff she removed from her carpet and explained that she had no doubt as to how effective the carpet sweeper had been - it quite literally whisked away the mess.
‘It literally took two minutes to do our bedroom, and our carpet looks cleaner than ever! Obviously, it doesn't completely replace the vacuum, but I am SO happy with this. Sometimes the old-fashioned stuff really is the best,’ she said.
The post was a hit with the Facebook group, with members reminiscing about the product, commenting on their own experiences, and even sharing their old-fashioned dialect for the device.
'We used to call it the carpet mower when I was a kid,' one woman reminisced.
Not only was the post incredibly popular, but it also attracted some helpful reviews.
'Works really well. GO EASY! I went too hard and damaged a small section of my carpet as I swept too hard. Go lightly and figure out what works for your flooring,' one review said.
‘I have one and use it a lot around mats, around the coffee table and entrance door mats daily. Saves getting out the big boy vacuum often. My version of the stick vacuum, I say,’ another woman shared.
On the Bunnings website, the carpet sweeper has a customer rating of 4.2 out of five stars. Which isn’t too shabby a score, if you ask us.
For those of you who aren’t too familiar with carpet sweepers, as opposed to a traditional vacuum, carpet sweepers don’t require any bags or filters and are extremely lightweight, making them far easier to use. They are also quieter than a vacuum which is always a huge plus.
The way it works is there is a strong, low-profile metal agitator that the carpet sweeper has, which is very effective in picking up dirt embedded deep into carpet fibres; tufted carpets are no match for the rotating brushes, which can easily remove lint, pet hair and other debris. What’s more, they are also very effective on hard surfaces such as tiles, wood and linoleum, removing dust and dirt particles with ease. If you want to see how this carpet sweeper works, you can watch the video below!
So, if you want to cut your carpet cleaning time from 45 minutes to just two, then why not use this ‘old school contraption’ to help you out? Or maybe you already use one? We’d love to hear all about it if you do and whether you think it is worth getting for just $35.99.
