In a distressing incident that has left a community shaken, a 70-year-old grandfather has expressed his fear and anxiety after being the victim of a violent assault at a caravan park.
Ian Pope, who has been enjoying the nomadic lifestyle travelling around Australia in his caravan for the past two years, never expected his journey to take such a harrowing turn.
The incident unfolded on a seemingly ordinary evening last Monday at around 5 pm when Mr Pope drove into Akoonah Park, a camping and caravan park in Melbourne.
His return was meant to be a peaceful interlude but quickly spiralled into a nightmare.
According to Mr Pope, the trouble began when he encountered a woman and two children walking in the middle of the road. As he followed behind them in his car, the situation escalated without warning.
Mr Pope recounted the woman's aggressive approach to his vehicle, where she accused him of speeding and endangering children in the caravan park.
He said, ‘She was in the middle of the road, and she just started to abuse me about speeding and killing kids in the caravan park.’
‘I wasn’t speeding, I was being very careful.’
Despite his assurances that he was driving carefully, the woman's verbal tirade continued.
Mr Pope, a grandfather of five, chose not to engage further and drove around the woman to reach his van, hoping that would end the confrontation.
However, the altercation was far from over. The woman tracked Mr Pope down to his caravan.
She resumed her verbal assault, going as far as taking photos of him, his caravan, and his car, threatening to expose him to others and ominously warning that he would regret it.
Mr Pope captured a video of the encounter, where the woman can be heard making her accusations.
He said, ‘[She] told me she had all my details, she was going to make sure that other people knew about it, and I was going to be sorry.’
The situation took a darker turn later that evening. While Mr Pope was preparing his dinner outside his van, he was blindsided by an attack from two men.
The assault was brutal, leaving him with bleeding on the brain, facial injuries, and lacerations.
Despite the shock and pain, Mr Pope had the presence of mind to drive himself to the police station, where an ambulance was called to take him to the hospital.
The emotional toll on Mr Pope and his family has been immense. His son Michael spoke of the heartache of seeing his father so vulnerable and injured, emphasising the severity of the attack that could have had even more tragic consequences.
Michael said, ‘To see the photos of your own dad when I chatted to him just to hear how broken he was ... it really just hits you in the guts ... it hurts to see it.’
‘He could have killed him, there’s no doubt about that.’
The fear instilled by the incident has confined Mr Pope indoors as he grapples with the reality that a simple drive into a caravan park could result in such violence.
Mr Pope said, ‘I’m lucky I got up and walked away... I keep thinking, I’ve never done that much wrong by anybody to deserve that.’
‘[I’m] just a bit nervous [of] turning around... and they might be there,’ he noted.
‘It does put a bit of a fear into you.’

The community is now on high alert, with police actively investigating the assault.
Descriptions of the offenders have been released—one believed to be in their 30s and the other in their 50s—and they are said to have fled the scene in a white van with company signage.
