Good news for Qantas flyers – fewer points are needed to book flights, hotels, and holidays!

In a bid to allow their members to use the points they have been saving up over the years, Qantas has just reduced the required number of points needed to book hotels and holiday packages, even flights!

The frequent flyer points needed to book domestic and international hotel stays have been cut by 30 per cent, while the points needed to book Qantas Holidays packages have been cut by an astounding 45 per cent.

And for flight bookings, Qantas flyers will need 20 per cent fewer points when using Points Plus Pay.

The reduction in points required for hotel and holiday bookings will be permanent. However, the 20 per cent discount on flight bookings is a limited time offer and will only be available until April 30 of this year. (So if you’re looking to book flights, you might want to hurry as seats are running out fast!)

Qantas Loyalty chief executive Olivia Wirth said that due to the changing flight restrictions, many of their members haven’t been flying anywhere and want to use the points they have saved up.

According to her: “If you look at domestic trends, people are looking for weekends away up the coast or something similar and that might not include a flight – this provides the chance for our customers to use points on those trips.”

In their 2021 financial results, Qantas reported that the number of unredeemed frequent flyer points totalled a staggering $3 billion dollars.

Ms Wirth also said that the move will help drive extra activity for hotels, as the pandemic made it “very tough” for them.

“We think hotels and holidays will be a top redemption for our customers. We already see three-quarters of points redeemed on travel, and we are already seeing an increase in customers looking to burn points on hotels.”

Ever since domestic and international travel restarted last November, Qantas customers are reported to be using around $7 billion worth of points every month, with flights remaining the most redeemed reward in the loyalty program.

Wow, that sounds like the perfect time for a holiday getaway, eh?

If you’re going to beachside hotels and holidays anytime soon, don’t forget to bring these summer essentials!
