Glow from the inside out: Experts reveal the best self-care practices including one that’s LOVED by celebs

A lot of us tend to associate productivity with self-worth. Whether it’s getting all the chores done, giving back to the community, or learning something new, people are always on the lookout for something to do.

Although it’s not a bad thing to live a hectic life (some people actually like the busy lifestyle!) it can also be unhealthy to glorify working beyond your capacity.

So don’t forget to give yourself some TLC too! Because keeping your well-being in check is just as important as staying productive and attempting to juggle all of your life’s aspects.

If you’re unsure where to start, The Oleon House Co-founders, Menna Olvera and Carlos Leon, curated a list of the best self-care practices that will help you find your zen!

1. Consider getting IV therapy (celebrity approved!)

Famous icons such as Brad Pitt and Madonna are among the first stars to give intravenous vitamin therapy a shot as it helped them stay fit and healthy.

'IV therapy is something that has been around for a long time,' said Celebrity Personal Trainer, Carlos.

But lately, the procedure went from being a common medical treatment to a hot new trend. People use it to cure just about anything, including bad skin and nasty hangovers.

The procedure can take from 20 minutes to an hour and is performed by a licensed medical professional.

'It's a great way to get your supplements like Vitamin B, C, and D, in addition to minerals and other good-for-you nutrients,' explained Carlos. 'It also hydrates your body and will leave you feeling energetic.'

2. Schedule alone time and a rest day

Although we are naturally social creatures, ensuring that you have time for yourself plays a pivotal role in mental health.

According to a 2020 study published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers discovered that ‘isolation led to increased activity in the neural circuits related to imagination. When left with a lack of social stimulation, the brain ramps up its creative networks to help fill the void.’

It can seem a little difficult to commit to but you can always start slow. Whether it’s an hour off each week to enjoy a hot bath or following through with your skincare routine, taking a break to unwind can be emotionally and mentally beneficial in the long run.

After all, a day’s rest is necessary for your body, mind, and soul to function properly!

3. Make time for a social life

Yes, alone time now and then is important but so is getting in touch with your loved ones! Studies have shown that a strong social network also supports physical and emotional health; so it’s best to find the perfect balance between solitude and socialising.

'It’s imperative–especially after the pandemic–that you spend quality time with friends, family, and co-workers,' said The Oleon co-founder.

Carlos also believes in entertainment to feed the soul. 'Take yourself out to a movie, an exhibit, or dinner.'

4. Savour the little things

Menna said: 'According to The Science of Wellbeing from Yale Professor Lourie Santos, savouring is the act of stepping outside the experience to review and appreciate it,’

‘For example, you are on a beach in Greece watching the sunset and you want to savour that moment. So, you step outside of it and have a moment of gratitude and are mindful.'

As a daily journal exercise, Menna recommended writing down any moment you’ve experienced that you want to savour for seven days.

‘Take note of where you were and what were you doing at the time. Notice what or how you feel.' she added.

5. Be a little more grateful for everything

Trying to look for the silver lining even in the worst situations can change your perspective!

'Gratitude is the act of appreciation for what you have. When gratitude is expressed, it elevates a connection to wellness,' Menna continued.

'Studies show that writing down five things you are grateful for once a week is going to influence you. You are going to want to eat better, even exercise more, and feel better, all because you set out to explore what it means to add an act of gratitude to your lifestyle.'

Menna suggested writing down five things to be grateful for once a week and noticing what changes develop in your life.

6. Meditate, meditate, meditate!

When things slip out of our control, sometimes the best way to cope with it is by taking a breather. Meditation is great as it can help give you a sense of peace and balance.

'The act of slowing down and becoming familiar with yourself improves relaxation and regulates your breath and heart rate. In turn, this enhances the flow of constructive thoughts and positive emotions,' Menna, who is a certified yoga instructor, detailed.

As an exercise, Menna instructed: 'Sit in a chair or lay down and place a pillow under your knees. For about 3 to 5 minutes, close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath. Notice as the mind begins to slow down along with your breath and heart rate. They work coherently as one. Decide how many days a week you can commit to this then write it on your calendar.’

If you’d prefer a guided meditation, which is ideal for beginners, Youtube is a fantastic, free resource. If you have a moment, we’d highly recommend taking some time to watch/ participate in this 13-minute guided meditation for self-love. We promise you’ll feel like a different person afterwards. (April swears by this specific instructor but there are hundreds, if not thousands out there!)

Now, how do you feel? More grounded? More aware of your breathing? Peaceful? You deserve to feel your very best.

Take good care of yourselves, everyone! We highly encourage consulting a professional as well to find the most suitable self-care practices for you. What’s your favourite self-love tip? Share them with us in the comments!
