Glory Box

Who remembers the tradition of keeping glory boxes? For many young women who grew up in the 1950s and onwards, filling this chest with all sorts of household items in preparation for their future marriage became an important rite of passage. Members, did you or anyone in your family had one of these glory boxes? Share your memories with us.

My mother’s father made her a glory cupboard, which I have had for a number of years. I don’t know how old it would be, but mum would be 104 if she was still alive. I keep all sorts of precious items in it, all my photo albums, a few baby items of my 42 year old son & various other items that hold special memories. I know my mum loved her glory cupboard.

I've been lucky enough to have had my own "bottom Drawer" that started the collection of things for moving out on the start of life's adventure in the early 80's. Lots of Linen and the necessary Tupperware collection of the time. I was also fortunate enough to admire and end up with my Nanna's chest. Made in Parhran in the late 1920's. It still holds important memories and memento's and looks great. the only thing that hasn't survived in tact is the leather straps at each end, because the clips and locks still work. While not a Hope chest my mum had a camphor wood chest made in the early 70's that still holds important pieces of family history and has that beautiful smell. I admit to opening it occasionally just for the smell and the memories that go with it.

My late Mum started collecting things for me when I was in high school and we had a dedicated large section of a wardrobe to store them. Not only linen but things like glasses, casserole dishes, cutlery, saucepans. It was a good way to start out being independent when I moved away from home. I still have some things from all that time ago.
