Glam rock guitar hero (84) and renowned actor (80) leave behind unforgettable legacies

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of two influential figures, each leaving a lasting impact on their respective fields.

One was a musician (84)whose work helped shape a defining era, while the other was an actor (80) known for bringing unique and memorable characters to life.

Both made significant contributions that resonated with audiences and helped shape the cultural landscape.

Jacques De Jongh's journey in music began with his involvement in smaller bands like Shadowfax, and his talent quickly propelled him to join the Redhouse Roll Band from Geelong.

His strong musicianship was undeniable, and in 1976, he became a part of Hush, a band that had already captured the hearts of fans with chart-topping hits such as 'Bony Moronie' and 'Glad All Over' since their formation in 1971.

De Jongh's versatility shone through as he first played rhythm guitar for Hush before transitioning to bass.

He was featured on the band's last album, Touche, which was released in 1977.

But his musical journey didn't end with Hush. After the band's breakup, De Jongh collaborated with pop legend John Paul Young.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that he played on Young's acclaimed 1977 album Love is in the Air, a single that became an international sensation.

His contributions extended to Young's follow-up album, Heaven Sent, in 1979.

However, De Jongh's passion for music matches his love for the culinary arts.

He eventually stepped away from the limelight to become a chef, opening his own restaurant and running a rehearsal studio, where he continued to support and nurture upcoming bands.

Hush, the band that catapulted De Jongh to fame, was formed in 1971 in the Sydney suburb of Seven Hills by British expats, vocalist Keith Lamb and guitarist Robin Jackson.

They were joined by bass player Rick Lum, Chris Nolan on keyboards, and drummer John Koutt.

By the mid-70s, Hush had become a staple on the legendary ABC music show Countdown, known for their flamboyant stage costumes featuring scarves, bare skin, and chunky high-heeled boots.

Their bright, upbeat, heavy rocking sound led to six top albums, three of which hit the top 40.

Jacques De Jongh's legacy is in the records he helped create and the lives he touched.

Friend Ian Lovell shared with Noise11 that Jacques was active in the music business until his health no longer allowed him to work.

'Jacques worked as a chef of some note. He had a restaurant,' Lovell explained.

'He also ran a rehearsal studio and helped all sorts of bands. He was very active up until his poor health stopped him working.'

The loss of Jacques De Jongh is felt deeply within the Australian music community and by fans worldwide.

His contributions to the glam rock genre and his support for fellow musicians have left an indelible mark on the industry.

As we remember De Jongh, we celebrate his musical achievements, his spirit of mentorship, and his second act as a culinary artist.

Meanwhile, Peter Jason's journey in the world of acting was as eclectic as the roles he embodied.

From the dusty streets of Deadwood to the dojos of Karate Kid and the prehistoric thrills of Jurassic World, his career was a testament to his ability to slip into any character.

His portrayal of Con Stapleton in Deadwood remains a standout, showcasing his talent for bringing depth to even the most eccentric of roles.

But it was his love for the macabre that truly set him apart.

Jason had a particular penchant for horror films, a genre in which he thrived and became a familiar face to fans.

His collaborations with legendary horror director John Carpenter resulted in some of the most iconic films of the genre, including Prince of Darkness, They Live, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, and Escape from L.A.

These films showcased his acting chops and his ability to resonate with audiences through the lens of horror.

The news of Peter Jason's death was confirmed by John Carpenter, who took to social media to express his sorrow.

Carpenter's tweet read, 'Peter Jason, one of the great character actors in cinema, has died. His first movie was Howard Hawks' Rio Lobo. He was a dear friend, and I'll miss him terribly.'

The tributes didn't end there. Billy Zane, known for his role in Titanic, shared his grief on social media, painting a picture of Jason as a bright light and a generous soul.

‘If there are no words, then there certainly is no music. My dear, dear friend, the brightest light, most generous soul and gregarious of men, the supremely talented and kind Peter Jason has left the set,’ he said.

‘Survived by his lovely wife Eileen and his children, the vacuum felt by his passing gut punched me as I saw it coming.’

‘All I know is his wake will be widely attended by and teeter somewhere between a Friar's Roast to a burial at sea befitting an admiral, See you on the back 9, my friend!’

Jason's agent and manager for 25 years, Tom Harrison, also shared his sentiments:

‘25 years as his agent and then manage, and most importantly, my friend…and cohort. The world is a little smaller, and a party on the other end.’

Fans across the globe joined in mourning, expressing their admiration for Jason's work and the energy he brought to every performance.

With over 260 screen credits, his legacy is vast, and those who appreciate his craft will feel his absence deeply.

Peter Jason's personal life was as rich as his professional one.

He leaves behind his wife Eileen, whom he married in 1979, and their daughter Robin Goldwasser, a playwright and the spouse of musician John Flansburgh.

His family life, often kept out of the spotlight, was a source of strength and inspiration for the actor.

As we reflect on Peter Jason's remarkable career, it's clear that his contributions to the entertainment industry were as varied as they were impactful.

From horror aficionados to fans of Westerns and everything in between, Jason's performances have left a lasting impression.
