Get your house clean in half the time with these life-saving hacks!

We all know the feeling. You wake up on a beautiful spring day, and all of a sudden, you get the overwhelming urge to clean your house from top to bottom (or at least attempt to). There's just something about the warmer weather and longer days that give us a burst of energy and motivation to get rid of the cobwebs and start afresh.

But as anyone who's ever attempted a spring clean knows, it's not always as simple or fun as it sounds. It can be pretty daunting – especially if your house is on the larger side, or if you don't have much help around the place.

That's why we went looking for some cleaning experts’ top time-saving hacks that'll help you get your home spick-and-span in no time! Here's the advice the experts offered:

Clean one room at a time.
If you're like most people, you probably try to clean multiple rooms at once when taking on a big tidy-up job like spring cleaning. But according to green-cleaning expert, Tonya Harris, this often winds up wasting time in the long run. 'Cleaning just one room at a time will save time,' she says 'rather than trying to clean two or three rooms simultaneously'. Decide which room you want to tackle first, then work your way from top to bottom – saving vacuuming for last! This methodical approach will help keep you focused and prevent costly (and frustrating) backtracking later on down the line.

Use a multipurpose cleaner.
'The beauty of multipurpose cleaners is that they can be used for… Well… multiple purposes!' says Becky Rapinchuk of Clean Mama. If you don't have any multipurpose cleaner around the house already, she suggests investing in some – it'll save valuable minutes (not to mention money!) in future cleaning sessions. 'And if you want to make your own,' Harris adds, 'white vinegar and baking soda are great ingredients for an endless array of cleaning options - from toilets and showers’.

Bring a container into each room.
Harris says it's a good idea to bring a container into the room you're working on cleaning, so if you find things you want to move somewhere else in your house, you can cut down on the running around. ‘As you move to each room, put away items in the container that belong in that room, and add ones that don't,’ she notes.

Beat The Clock!
Who says you can’t turn cleaning into a game? We recommend setting a timer and challenging yourself to beat the clock, noting that it won’t only speed you up, but it’ll keep you on task. This is also helpful if you only have a limited time to clean. After all, there's nothing like a ticking clock to get you moving more efficiently.

Pair cleaning with something fun!
Use cleaning as an opportunity to multitask by doing other things on your to-do list that don’t require your hands. Maybe you can call a friend? A family member? Catch up on your favourite podcast, or listen to an audiobook? This won’t only save you the time of having to do these things later, but it also makes it a little bit more enjoyable!

So, what do you think of these cleaning tips? Will you be giving them a try? If you do, please let us know in the comments below!

So the TIPS (hate the term ‘hacks’, just one of those unnecessary ‘new’’ terms for something we already have a suitable word) are not new, been doing the same for many, many years! Except for the ‘timing’ tip, ok if you’re 10!!

When my mum was alive she would call for a quick chat, which could last for ever 🙂. Luckily I had a cordless phone. I would do jobs around the house and get so much done.
