Get this $350 wardrobe essential for only $49 at Kmart—find out how!

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, finding the perfect blend of style and affordability can be a challenge.

Traditionally, trench coats are considered an investment piece, sometimes retailing at several hundred dollars, with high-end styles like one from a coveted brand coming in at an eye-watering $950.

However, retail giant Kmart has once again risen to the occasion, offering fashion enthusiasts a chance to own a trendy take on a classic wardrobe essential without breaking the bank.

Kmart presents the 'Denim Trench Coat ($49)' priced at a mere $49, which stands in stark contrast to the hefty price tags of upmarket versions.

A staple in many wardrobes for its classic design and ability to pair seamlessly with various outfits, the trench coat's latest incarnation has caught attention, igniting a debate among shoppers about its value as a fashion statement.

Stylist Sarah Strozkiy shared her ‘honest’ thoughts on social media on the denim trench, declaring it a ‘one-off trend’.

‘If you are someone who loves following trends, then definitely go for it,but just keep in mind that it’s one of those pieces that will probably sit in your wardrobe, and you’ll never wear it again, not like a regular trench coat,’ she said.

‘One in a neutral colour like a black or a nice caramel or cream is a really good one, and denim jackets, obviously.’

However, some expressed their admiration for the jacket, saying they ‘love’ it and ‘ordered it instantly’ upon seeing it online.

‘This $49 Kmart Australia trench is everything!!’ one user, Bianca, said after posting her video trying the coat in-store.

She matched the blue garment, described as oversized on the brand's website, with a white T-shirt and a set of beige pants.

‘I ran to the website. Thank you,’ one commented.

‘This is a vibe,’ another said.

‘My manager sent me this, and I kid you [not], placed [the] order in less than 10 mins. Love, love it,’ a third shared.

Others said that the item offered excellent value for its price, noting that a well-known Australian brand, One Teaspoon, currently has a denim trench coat available for sale at $349.

The budget retailer's denim trench boasts an oversized style, is crafted from a blend of polyester, cotton, viscose, acrylic, and nylon, and is ‘designed to fade’, according to Kmart’s website.

This isn't the first time Kmart has introduced a trench coat; it debuted in 2023 with a ‘sandstone’ colour, and was observed back in stock this year.

‘The versatility of the trench is why customers are all wanting to own it—it’s great for casual weekend dressing with jeans and a T-shirt, or knit as the weather starts to cool down,’ a Kmart spokesperson said.

‘Alternatively it’s a great layering piece for dressing up over a top and skirt or a great dress with heels.’

Shoppers immediately embraced the wardrobe piece, expressing their enthusiasm for it online.

‘This is the best $49 I have ever spent at Kmart,’ one customer said.

‘Would never guess it’s Kmart,’ another commented.

‘I got it, how amazing is it,’ a third agreed.

Competition in the affordable trench coat landscape is heating up, with Target also offering its own oversized version at $80.

Some also dubbed it as a 'dupe' of luxury models, like the $950 Fernando Trench from renowned brand Camilla and Marc.

Claudia Coy, Social Media Producer at Checkout, applauded Target's offering, saying, ‘This could be the dupe to end all dupes.’

‘Target recently released this oversized trench coat, and it looks super similar to the Camilla & Marc one I’ve had my eyes on for months.’

‘As someone who loves a bargain, I couldn’t be happier to have saved hundreds of dollars while still achieving that effortless, Kourtney-Kardashian-inspired, change-of-season, cool-girl look,’ she added.

While some love the look of the trench coat, others might be more into dresses, or just want something lighter.

I saw some of their new coats on Sunday and was amazed at how nice there were.

Unfortunately I don't need a coat otherwise I may have thought about buying one.

The last long denim jacket I had was in the 70s and I'm sure it was a John and Merrivale brand

Looks trendy but never cold enough to wear a coat.I hate having to wear too many layers so uncomfortable
