Are you looking to give your bedroom a little pick-me-up without breaking the bank? Or do you have a dull, old bedside table you’ve been wanting to spruce up? Then this easy and affordable Kmart hack is something you should consider!
With a bit of TLC, creativity and just $7, you can create a stylish, designer-inspired piece for your home!
Once in a while, you might get an itch to redecorate your bedroom or living room. But if you don't have a lot of time or money to spend, you may feel like there's nothing you can do.
But Sydney local Katrina recently showed off her awesome Kmart transformation and it shows just how easy it can be to add designer touches to any bedroom with minimal effort.
‘I flipped some bedside tables using the Kmart rattan roll and round handles, and of course, used some Kmart decor to stage it!’ Katrina said in a popular Facebook group for home décor.
Once Katrina had the vision finalised in her head, the process was simple.
First, she scruff-sanded the exterior down – this process helps the paint adhere to the furniture better. Then, Katrina used Taubmans paint in ‘Country Beige’ all over the drawers to achieve an earthy and warm look.
Once the furniture was dry, Katrina then measured the insets of the drawers and cut her Kmart rattan roll to size. She did this by using a skinny 6mm dowel to frame the fabric, before using a nail gun to secure the edges.
She also changed out the drawer’s old handles and replaced them with brand-new ones from Kmart as well.
Many applauded the mum for her creativity, excellent work, and impeccable outcome. Some even called it a ‘miracle’ because of how professional the job looks.
Someone added: ‘This is so brilliant.’
‘You are so talented, I love this,’ another commented.
You can buy the rattan roll for only $4.00, and the round handles for $2.00 (for a two-pack). Both are available online.
The rattan roll is made from Hessian material, with the following dimensions: 150 cm (L) x 30 cm (W). According to the product description, the roll is specifically designed for DIY projects at home and for creating ‘stunning artworks’.
The round handles, on the other hand, come in pairs. The handle is made from Zinc alloy (a very strong metal), and the screws are made from iron. It’s easy to install and has a stainless-steel look that enhances the ‘look’ of an old, rusty cupboard or in Katrina’s case, bedside tables.

Just make sure to be gentle with the sanding – especially if what you’re working on isn’t solid wood as this can damage the surface of your furniture. It is also important to use the correct grit sandpapers as this will determine how much of the finish you remove.
5. Lacquering is also another great upcycling technique. Lacquers are available in different finishes and can be applied to the furniture to help protect the wood and create the desired look.
6. Invest in quality materials to produce the best results. When it comes to certain products (like paint or wood), consider the details of what you’re buying to discern how long your DIY project will last.
