Get more out of your wardrobe! A stylist reveals the three pieces you're probably ‘underusing’
- Replies 2
We sometimes struggle to find ‘the right thing’ to wear and often have trouble making the most of the items we already have in our closets.
Fortunately, an award-winning stylist from Melbourne has shared her tips on how to make the most out of the items that you may have lying around in your wardrobe.
Melissa Murgana, a professional stylist, explained that a common problem among her clients is that they often have a ton of clothes in their wardrobe, but don’t know how to maximise their pieces – making it feel like they have ‘nothing to wear’.
‘Got a wardrobe full of clothes but still struggle to put outfits together?’ She asked her followers on Instagram.
In a recent post on social media, she said: ‘Here are three pieces that I see in a lot of wardrobes that are often under-utilised, and then some inspiration on how to make the most of what you have.’
Do you have any of these pieces in your wardrobe?
Mid-wash jeans
According to Melissa, the first under-utilised item in everyone's wardrobe is a pair of mid-wash blue jeans.
She said that rather than matching them with a blazer, why not try them with a sleeveless option instead?
The stylist admitted that she liked to wear her jeans with a pair of sandals, a white T-shirt and throws on a sleeveless blazer.
Melissa explained that this is a simple way to get an outfit that is casual enough to wear when meeting with friends over brunch, or semi-formal enough for proper events.
Slip skirt
Melissa noted that sometimes, the slip skirt is hard for her clients to incorporate into their outfits because they view it as ‘dressy’.
To make it more casual, Melissa suggested adding a pair of ‘chunky sandals’ and a longer outerwear piece like a denim jacket, or cotton shirt.
‘You can also add a trench coat,’ she said.
Wide-leg pants
Finally, if you have wide-leg pants, you can make them work for you in terms of fit.
‘Regardless of the colour you have, you need to make sure you've got the fit right as it's all about the fit and flow,’ Melissa explained.
For example, you can wear a fitted top with super-wide-leg trousers, or you can wear a wider top – provided it still has a degree of shape. Ideally, wider tops should come in at the waist.

- Know your body and focus on what suits your shape – don’t focus on what’s trending so much.
- Invest in solid and versatile pieces that can work with other clothing items.
- Don’t underestimate the power of a pop of colour in your outfit. Also, don’t be afraid to add accessories.
- Make sure to ‘style’ your outfits based on your taste. There are tons of ‘hacks’ to tuck shirts and tees and fix jeans to make outfits more polished.
- Have some go-to neutral outfits that work for every season. That way, even if you’re in a hurry, you have something to reach for.
