Get more health benefits with this 20-second ‘secret’ trick!

In a world where quick fixes and instant gratification are the norms, it's refreshing to hear that some of the best things in life are not only free but also readily accessible.

Doctor Zac Turner, a medical practitioner with a wealth of knowledge from nursing to biomedical science, has shared a simple yet profound health tip that can be done anywhere, anytime, and it only takes 20 seconds.

We've all heard the saying that 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away', but what if the prescription for a healthier life was even simpler than that?

According to Dr Zac, the secret lies in the power of human touch, specifically in the form of a hug.

While most of us are no strangers to embracing our loved ones, Dr Zac suggested that extending these hugs to a full 20 seconds can have a significant impact on our well-being.

‘Hugging provides a number of health benefits,’ Dr Zac said.

‘It triggers the release of oxytocin, better known as the human love hormone, which reduces stress levels and promotes feelings of relaxation. Oxytocin may also boost the immune system, making you more resistant to infections and illnesses.’

But the benefits don't stop there. Hugs also stimulate the production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that are associated with happiness and pleasure.

These 'feel-good' chemicals can elevate our mood and create a sense of contentment.

It's no wonder that hugs are often seen as a universal language of comfort and affection.

The advantages of a 20-second hug extend to cardiovascular health as well.

‘If the studies showing improved cardiovascular health from hugging are true, this means it also boosts your heart health,’ Dr Zac said.

‘This helps with lowering blood pressure, reducing heart rate and improving heart function. Overall this can potentially reduce the risk of heart disease.’

Despite the clear health benefits, the average hug duration is just 9.5 seconds.

‘For any of the above health benefits to kick in, you need to hug for at least 20 seconds,’ Dr Zac suggested.

‘It may seem like a long time, but it is worth it!’

A red face at the wrong time can be a source—and a sign—of embarrassment and discomfort for many.

In a previous story, Dr Zac also discussed the causes and effects of having a red face. He said there are several reasons behind why our faces are blushing. You can read more about the story here.
