Haha, there are FAR MORE vehicles on the road now. Since 1970 the population has doubled and the vehicle population has quadrupled.

Also far more tech in vehicles now. Older vehicles were far more unreliable and plenty of brands still have an excellent reputation with little to no problems.

Somebody's quality assurance systems are not up to scratch or the specifications are not appropriate for the application. Having worked in the automotive original equipment and aftermarket fields for 20 years developing materials in the area of polymers. Hoses, suspension and brake parts, automatic transmission components, you name it! Except for tyres and wiper blades.

The hoops one had to jump through to get your material approved were horrendous. Then they set fire to the hoops for you to jump through again. Then poured petrol on the hoop and on it goes. Then if your prototype was successful, then pricing becomes a paramount consideration, which didn't concern me - just the material development.

Then the question of quality control. ISO, AS, JIS, ASTM and DIN quality systems came into play. Sampling sizes, tolerances and frequency were labour intensive, taking up almost 10% of the company's workforce. Then the product is shipped to Holden, Ford, Toyota , Mitsubishi, Mazda, Bendix, PBR, Borg-Warner, Narva, whoever. Then their quality teams check the components with a fine tooth comb in accordance to their quality systems. One part fails and the whole shipment is sent back, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of parts. Then the whole process starts all over again.

Along the process that I have described, somebody stuffed up, causing the Hyundai's fuel pump impeller to fail in rare instances. In those situations, heads will roll and it won't be at the automotive manufacturer.
