Welcome to a brand new week!

Let’s take a trip down memory lane this morning! What’s a family tradition from your childhood that still brings a smile to your face? Was it a holiday ritual, a weekly family dinner, or perhaps a silly game that stuck around year after year? Whatever it was, I want to hear it!

For me, it was getting all dressed up in my Sunday best for church. I always felt so grown-up and proud until I managed to spill juice on my dress five minutes before we had to leave.

I lived with my grandparents and Mine has to be every Saturday where it started off watching TV while having breakfast .

Then my grandmother and I would walk to Riverwood Station and catch a train to central or circular Quay to either visit her sister in Leichardt or catch a ferry to Manly or the Zoo. This was something we did for years
Then in the evening my Grandfather returned home from his day at the races with dinner that he picked up from a Chinese restaurant in Riverwood.

Then Sunday it was either going on a road trip or we would go visit my grandfathers parents in Kurrajong

My grandparents were 40 when I was born.

Luckily I have a lot of good childhood memories. My favourite is Dad would make sure he came to my school sports softball comp on Friday afternoons with a big box of oranges to hand out to everyone. Then after school on Friday's he would take the whole family (7 of us) to a swimming hole for a couple of hours...rubber inner tube tyres to play around on , whole watermelons we would float with and lots of water games. On Saturdays afternoons mum & dad would go to the big footy match and we would turn the TV on for Bandstand and all us 5 girls would clear the big loungeroom of coffee tables and sing and dance the afternoon away. The simple things made my childhood memorable of many things.

I can remember asking mum if I could help make some cakes and she said OK. I was about 5 or 6 at the time I think. She didn't tell me to wash my hands and they were not very clean but I got into the making of these small cakes and she put the tray in the oven. They looked very good when they were cooked and I couldn't understand why no-one but me would eat them as they tasted very good!!

Dancing with my dad on a boat in Liverpool UK when we visited relatives.
My dad was supposed to pick up my sister from the bus and he forgot and she ended up at the police station.

Making Tomato Sauce the traditional Italian way with crates of Tomatoes picked up, machined, salted, bottled with Basil sprigs, topped, loaded into 44gal Drums of water, Boiled and then stored for use. A Whole extended Family involved each with a job. Then a big Family Lunch with Fresh Pasta and Sauce, Crusty Bread, Garden salad and the MUST HAVE glass of Wine!!! Paradise!!

Every Friday night without fail fish and chips on the beach at Black Rock all nine of us plus my auntie and uncle. Ahhh I can smell those divine smells of the food and the sea, and the sounds of the waves and the seagulls and the happy laughter and lots of love.Memories are made of this.

I loved reading all these post. The forgotten memories came flooding back. So many of those things I also did as a child.
Standing on either my uncles or grandfathers feet and either dancing or walking.
Going to the beach with my aunt and cousins and cutting open the huge watermelon.

Cooking and baking with mum was always a favourite. She'd put her pinny on me and prop me up on a chair. We'd talk for hours, she was my best friend. Sewing was another treasured time. This continued into adulthood. I miss her every day.

I don't have a lot of family traditions as a child, sadly my mother was more of a boys mother than a girls, with me being the only girl in a family of 4 then I got ignored a lot of the time. But I learnt to amuse myself and with one of my brothers, the next one up from me, we spent a lot of time together because we both lived with our dad and the other 2 lived with our mum.
But one tradition I do recall is living with dad and getting a care parcel every week from our mother. She ran a tuck shop so she would load up a box full of treats for us and post them from the other side of town. That was a great tradition and when we did move in with our mum every Saturday we use to walk to the local shopping centre for lunch and a shop, I loved that too

l can relate to that.My mother once said to me that she always thought more of my sister Jean than me. l was like my dad and she hated him. It's amazing how cruel some parents can be. My mother was all about herself. I have no good memories as a child with her. I can't even remember any gifts that she got me. But I was lucky I had my grandparents, her parents.

What I learnt from her was to never be like her. I always said I would love my kids equally and that I would love them unconditionally which I do.

And I buy my mother a gift for her birthday and mothers day. This year I have got her a new robe and 3 pairs of pjs plus a blanket. Even now she will say she sent me a birthday card but I never receive it.
My kids dont understand why I buy her gifts.
I always remember what my grandmother told me , if someone is bad to you then you be good to them, if someone is greedy then you share and most important one, giving is better than receiving.
