Garbos​

Who still remembers the Garbos back in the day? They’d come around like clockwork, and Dads would leave out a couple of beers for them at Christmas—a small gesture, but one that made the holidays feel complete. What are your fond memories of garbos? Share them here.

They were often footballers keeping themselves fit during the "off season". Many years ago I did bread deliveries for the same reason even though I didn't play football. It sure kept me fit.

We had the night carters in two places we rented in the '60s.

In the first place we were at the bottom of a very steep 300m drive, with a loose concrete slab half way up.

They drove down to change the can, but forgot to tie the full cans securely.

The slab bounced and they spent 2 hours shovelling up the mess.


In the second place the council dug a trench for the new sewerage system they planned to install.

The carter didn't see it in the dark on the way in, but he certainly found it on his way out.

I bet he had a very long bath when he got home...

Those can lids weren't meant to withstand you dropping into a six foot deep hole while carrying them on your shoulder.

oh this is so familiar. We had a can tipped down the full length of our front path. We had a friend who went to work in a suit so people wouldn't know where he worked and my brother and I got tormented with kids yelling 'YOUR FATHER WORKS FOR SHIT" ....He actually owned an early plumbing and draining business.

We had a night carter who was afraid of our dog (who was as gentle as a lamb) so he always 2 cans with him. 1 to replace the one he was taking and 1 to stick in the dogs face. (No wonder she barked at him). But one morning when he came my sister who had only been walking for about 3 or 4 months was on the back verandah with the dog. It was summer and she had just had her nappy taken off and she was naked. She stood beside the dog and barked at the man. He was laughing so hard he had to put both cans on the ground for fear of dropping them. He never brought 2 cans again because he realised that dog wouldn't hurt him. I think he was more scared of my sister.

Remember them well, they never walked - always ran. They were the fittest guys around town. Always left them 1/2 dozen stubbies at Xmas time.

We put out a six pack of stubbies every Christmas until a few years ago, until we saw someone pull up in their car and steal them!
I believe it's illegal now though.
