"Fun" Aunt takes 13 year old girl to get her bellybutton pierced without parental consent and is 'banned' from Easter

A Reddit user has sparked debate after revealing that her husband's sister took their 13-year-old daughter to get her bellybutton pierced without their consent.

The original poster (OP), who is 40 years old and from the US, said that her husband's sister is "not her favourite person".

"She's always involved in a different MLM (multi-level marketing scheme) every time we see her, she quits every other job she has after a month, asks us for money, and has a new boyfriend every time we see her," she wrote.

However, she said that their daughter has always been "crazy about her" and that she is the "fun" aunt.

The OP said that she found out about the piercing when she saw her daughter disinfecting it a few days later.

"Our daughter has expressed wanting this to her dad and I, and we firmly said no. My husband thinks they're trashy and I sort of agree. Maybe when she's a little older if that's really what she wants, but 13? No way," she wrote.

The OP said that she and her husband are now "banning" the sister from their Easter celebrations and that their daughter is "upset".

"At the end of the day, she took our daughter to do something that we firmly said no to, and potentially put her at harm. We also aren't going to allow our daughter to go with her aunt alone anywhere anytime soon," she wrote.

"Are we a**holes for this?"

Many Reddit users were quick to point out that the sister had disobeyed the parents' wishes and potentially put the child in danger.

"NTA ('not the a**hole) and it would be irresponsible to let her be alone with your daughter any time in the future. She had to have known she was doing it without your permission and what lengths will she go to be the cool aunt? Tattoos? Alcohol? Drugs?" wrote one user.

Another added: "NTA. But you should take your daughter to a tat shop that also specialises in piercings, they are often the best place to get them and they can look at what was done and tell you if it was done right, hopefully it was."

However, some users said that the OP was being "irresponsible" for calling the piercing "trashy" and that it was a phase that many people go through.

"If she had taken her to a reputable piercer, that would be a different story and I don’t think it would be an issue for a 13 year old (although legally they’re not old enough to do that without a parent I don’t think?) bodily autonomy is important and it’s not as if she can’t take it out if she changes her mind when she’s older, or hide it in professional situations, it’s not a nose ring or tongue ring," wrote one user.

Another added: "As someone who had a belly button Ruby, I can tell you it's not trashy. It was a phase of life that I enjoyed. With that said, 13 is too young in my opinion."

What are your thoughts on the matter, members? Leaving aside the question of whether or not the piercing is 'trashy', do you think the aunt was out of line? Should the parents have allowed their daughter to make her own decision, or was this a case of them rightfully exerting their authority? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Am a senior citizen that has tattoos, my wife has a tattoo on her behind, we are not ashamed of these. When our daughter was 16 she asked if she could have a tattoo , now we could have been hypocrites and said no,it was a long drawn out discussion, where, what and how big. It was with many anxious moments, she decided it was her decision a small colorful butterfly. My point being it was a family discussion, not decided by an Aunt who thought it was a good idea. I'm sure she ment well a bit harsh to disown a family member, we need to embrace not jump up and down, which I know many will 😄🇦🇺👍

Aunt most definitely did the wrong thing!

I've got a funny story about teenagers and piercing myself though! Quite a few years back we arrived at my best friend's place for the Christmas break & walked into a massive argument between 14 year old daughter & her mum ...... My girlfriend said to me "You talk to her! She's not listening to us"

What to say??

Well, I left it a while until things were less volatile than I asked Katie why she wanted to have her tongue pierced & she told me it was cool & 'everyone' is doing it. So I asked her if she knew WHY most people got their tongues pierced. She didn't - so I told her. She went "Eeew" and the subject was dropped immediately. Our friends wanted to know what I'd said but we agreed not breaking Katie's trust was more important so I didn't divulge the reason for several years & only told her parents after Katie thanked me for stopping her doing it.

so why?

Mother of sons with no tats or piercings. I think 13 is too young for any person to get a piercing in places other then the ear. My brother did his own ear at around that age as my parents said no. He thought it was wrong his sisters had ear piercings and he could not. He used a safety pin and a sleeper from my youngest sister. I would hate to think my grand daughter would do this at that age, her parents made her wait until she was 7 before her ears were done. Ears are a lot easier to keep clean the the belly button region, also the ears are less likely to be injured if torn or knocked if the piercing catches on something.

Technically she isn't able to make unconsented decisions until an older age, possibly 18 in America. l believe the Aunt was wrong & should not have gone behind the parent's back to have this done. A situation of distrust now exists between the daughter & sister/sister-in-law. I never had this situation arise with my 4 daughters but if it had at that age l believe my answer would have been no.
Banning the aunty from the Easter celebrations is possibly a bit drastic & will only alienate the daughter against her parents & force her more towards her aunty who she already holds in high esteem & drive a wedge between aunty & parents.

My daughter got her belly pierced at 22 and I was so upset with her and she is a nurse , it came out 6 months later as it was infected. My son was turning 21 and he tur Ed up to his party that cost me a fortune with his eyebrow pierced, his best friend got it done for him as a present, my husband lost it as my son was going to Greece the next day and visiting my husbands relatives. My husband is like the father in my big fat Greek wedding . He was saying why me ! The shame on the family, he put a band aide over it.

The answer to the question...13 is definitely too young and the aunt should never have looked at getting it done without the parents oermission. If the sister inkaw was so untrust worthy I would not have allowed my daughter to go anywhere with her.
