From Kath & Kim laughter to hospital struggles—this celebrity opens up about her cancer battle

Magda Szubanski has shared a moving message from her hospital bed as she faced stage four cancer treatment.

The much-loved Kath & Kim actress revealed she had been touched by the kindness of a young fan during one of her toughest moments.

Her candid update gave supporters a raw glimpse into her ongoing fight with Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

The 64-year-old star posted a clip to social media on Sunday evening, showing herself resting in bed while undergoing chemotherapy.

‘This is a special shout-out to 10-year-old Annabella in Adelaide. Thank you so much for your impression of Sharon Strzelecki. I'm in here having chemo and it really cheered me up,’ Magda said.

She smiled through her message, adding: ‘I'm very touched, that was a beautiful thing to do. Thank you my sweet.’

Magda explained that the cancer treatment was taking a toll.

‘Chemo is smacking me around right now and you really cheered me up. Bless you my darling,’ she continued.

Friends and fellow celebrities rushed to her comments section to share love and encouragement.

‘Lots of love Magda,’ wrote Alex Nation, while Gorgi Coghlan sent ‘so much love’. Celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge left a love heart emoji in support.

Magda first revealed her diagnosis in May when she appeared on social media with a shaved head, preparing for the side effects of chemotherapy.

‘Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,’ she explained.

She continued: ‘It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. The good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends, family and an incredible medical support team.’

‘Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne. I feel very fortunate.’

The actress has begun a treatment known as the Nordic protocol—also called the Nordic regimen—where tumours are treated with a combination of drugs over five phases.

She admitted the road ahead would be confronting.

‘It's pretty confronting. It is a full on. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time,’ she said.

Despite the challenges, she assured fans she was being cared for.

‘I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant. I've never felt more held by the people around me,’ she said.

Magda also reminded the public to be cautious around her.

‘Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised. So I can't hug no more. Don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly,’ she urged.

The comedian revealed her cancer was discovered unexpectedly during a routine breast screening.

‘This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,’ she explained.

‘TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and - voila! So the take away is - get tested and listen to your body! For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits.’

Magda’s openness about her health battle is a reminder that even in the toughest times, strength can be found in unexpected places.

Her story is not the only one showing how resilience can blossom in the face of hardship.
