In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Australian Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn, a member of the renowned Oarsome Foursome, has been stripped of some of his most cherished achievements—not by a competitor on the water, but by thieves on land.
Symbols of his dedication and sporting prowess were stolen from his vehicle in a brazen theft that shocked the Australian sporting community.
The theft occurred in Melbourne's Docklands area.
The medals were taken from Ginn's black Land Rover between last Thursday evening and Friday morning.
The audacious thieves not only took the one silver and three gold medals that Ginn had earned across four consecutive Olympic Games—Sydney, Athens, Beijing, and London—but also made off with a wetsuit, a GoPro camera, and some headphones.
These invaluable items were in Ginn's car because he had recently attended a speaking event at a local school, sharing his experiences and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
The Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit, led by Detective Sergeant Timothy Reiher, has been fervently working on the case.
They've released images of the four medals, hoping someone will recognise them and provide information.
‘These are unbelievably rare items with significant sentimental value,’ Detective Reiher said.
‘Olympic medals are awarded to the best of the best and are priceless to their recipients.’
‘We ask that people look out for these medals in pawn shops and online selling platforms.’
Ginn has been a source of national pride, from his first gold in the Coxless Four at the 1996 Atlanta Games to his silver in the Coxless Pair in London 2012.
