Former Seven reporter takes network to court after sudden dismissal

After a tenure spanning 20 years, Robert Ovadia's abrupt dismissal pushed him to a Federal Court action against the Seven Network and its news department boss, Anthony De Ceglie.

Mr Ovadia vehemently denied these allegations, yet the network decided to terminate the reporter.

Mr Ovadia's termination last June was filled with shock and controversy, given his reputation as an investigative reporter and two-time Walkley Award winner.

John Laxon of Laxon Lex took on Ovadia's case, which they filed last Friday.

In light of the case, Seven Network wrote a statement emphasising their commitment to addressing workplace misconduct.

'Seven is not in a position to comment on Mr Ovadia commencing legal proceedings as it is now before the Federal Court, other than to say that Seven will defend its position in this matter,' a Seven Network spokeswoman said.


The details of the allegations against Ovadia and the circumstances surrounding his dismissal remain a mystery.

Meanwhile, Ovadia remains determined to clear his name.

'Seven told me no current or former colleague has made any complaint against me,' he said.

'As far as I am aware, I have not been stood down by the company. Any suggestion I have misbehaved at any time is false, malicious and will be defended.'

In a series of messages he shared on social media, Mr Ovadia’s colleagues shared about their personal experiences with the reporter.

Some messages thanked him for his 'professional guidance, warmth and kindness'.


'His respectful, honest and kind nature has made him not only a reliable mentor but also a good friend I could always call for advice,' one message said.

'He was a true gentleman to me and to the many young women he worked with, consistently demonstrating the utmost respect and professionalism,' another emphasised.

These testimonials were in contrast to the allegations that led to his dismissal.
As the case progresses, the media and the public are watching closely.

The outcome of this legal action could have significant implications for how networks handle allegations of misconduct.

This is not just Ovadia’s fight for his career, but also a battle to preserve his legacy in an industry where reputation is everything.

I think 7 will lose you can't just sack somebody without investigating the complaint by channel 7's legal team
and when I was working you had to give employees 3 strikes and your out
