Ford issues worldwide recall of SUVs over engine fire concerns

Potentially flawed fuel injectors that could cause engine fires have led to a recall of around 634,000 Ford sport utility vehicles (SUVs) worldwide.

The recall covers Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs with model years 2020-2023 with 3-cylinder and 1.5-litre engines.

As of August, Ford Australia said it sold 1340 Escape units in the last year.

The Bronco Sport SUVs are not sold in Australia due to a limited market, but Aussies may see a local variant sometime in 2023 according to reports.

The recall also affects vehicles covered in another recall in April issued in the US over a similar defect that could cause an engine fire.

Fuel injectors are a common component of modern cars that feed their engines with precise bursts of air mixed with fuel.

Ford said cracks may develop and cause fuel vapours to accumulate near high-temperature areas under the hood. This accumulation is feared to cause engine fires.

Once repairs are available for the cars, dealers will update the vehicle software to check for the defect and provide a warning on the dashboard for drivers when necessary.

‘If a pressure drop in the fuel rail is detected, engine power will automatically be reduced to minimise any risk, while also allowing customers to drive to a safe location and stop the vehicle and arrange for service,’ Ford said.

Aside from the software, dealers will also install a tube that diverts fuel away from hot surfaces under the hood and check for strong fuel odours near the engine.

Ford has disclosed that there are 54 reports so far of engine fires, with four having cracked fuel injectors.

Thirteen other cases are being investigated for the fuel injector defect.

Despite the recall, it is reported that Ford expects a low rate of failure for the fuel injectors.

Customers are also advised to contact their dealers or reach Ford’s customer service team at 13 FORD (13 3673) about recalls.

Please share news of this with family and friends to avoid unfortunate incidents!

Other than what I've read here I wouldn't recognise a fuel injector if I bumped into one. What goes on under the bonnet these days is a complete mystery best left to the very nice men at the garage!
However, I would have thought that the people at Ford, who should be the experts in all things motoring, missed a possible threat to life and limb every day since 2020. It's just not good enough, pick up your game guys!
