If you thought the Easter treats had come and gone, think again.
A familiar bakery favourite has just received an unexpected makeover that’s stirring up plenty of buzz.
This fresh twist has caught the attention of taste testers and shoppers alike.
Easter had come and gone, but Woolworths surprised fans of the season’s limited-edition hot cross buns with a new bakery creation.
The popular finger bun had been reinvented with a modern twist that quickly caught the attention of food lovers.
This latest limited edition—Filled Buns inspired by finger buns—were already on shelves for $5.50.
Unlike traditional finger buns, which only had icing on top, Woolworths’ version featured a soft, slightly sweet brioche-style bun filled with pink icing inside.
The bun was finished with a light sprinkle of toasted coconut, adding an extra touch of flavour, Woolworths explained.
The new Filled Buns attracted positive feedback from foodies, including Nectro Vlangos (also known as Nectorious Papi) and Nick Vavitis, who shared their thoughts with social media lifestyle outlets.
Nick joked: ‘I thought they were berry berry exciting. I’m a huge strawberry lover fan and love a [strawberry] Freddo Frog so the inside of it (strawberry butter cream) reminded me of the strawberry filling of a Freddo Frog so that’s a big yes from me.’
He added: ‘I don’t think it matches the Cinnabon or Biscoff but it gets extra points for being different and creative.’
Nectro initially mistook the Filled Bun for a hot cross bun, but soon realised it was more like a bread roll, explaining: ‘At first I thought it was a hot cross bun. But it’s different. This tasted more like a bread roll. It’s not meant to be a hot cross bun anyway.’
He described the strawberry filling as pleasant but wished the coconut flavour had been stronger.
‘The strawberry filling was nice. I would’ve liked more coconut flavour to come through,’ he said.
Nectro felt the buns were ‘a cute and fun little snack that I think kids would love in their lunch boxes’ but added: ‘I probably wouldn’t buy it again for myself though.’
During a taste test shared on social media, Nick was clearly impressed by the strawberry filling, saying: ‘The filling inside smells exactly like a strawberry Freddo Frog and that’s a big yes from me!’
He went on: ‘The strawberry is like, super, super sweet, that really artificial strawberry taste, which, for me, I love.’
Nectro reiterated: ‘It's more like a bread roll rather than a hot cross bun, so it's not really giving hot cross bun, although it looks like one.’
Nick responded: ‘That's totally fine! Guys, you know I love artificial strawberry stuff, so that filling for me is a big, big tick.’
On the downside, Nectro commented: ‘The only thing is, I don't taste any coconut,’ with Nick agreeing that the strawberry filling overpowered the coconut.
‘Strawberry lovers will definitely love this, it's fun and I think that kids will love it more than the adults,’ Nectro concluded.
Social media users also reacted enthusiastically to the new treat, with one writing: ‘That inside shot is unreal.’
Another joked: ‘I'm berry berry keen on this.’
Some shoppers noted the similarity to hot cross buns, with one saying: ‘Legit left over hot cross buns.’
Others suggested ways to enjoy the Filled Buns, such as toasting them or making French toast.
‘I bet you they’re even better toasted. Or make French toast,’ one user commented.
