Food Standards Australia recalls pantry staple due to shattered find

Shopping for goods is an important task. Food safety does not just start at the supermarket aisles—it begins at the factories where it is made.

In a recent safety alert, Food Standards Australia (FSA) issued an urgent recall for a pantry staple found on ALDI and IGA shelves due to possible health concerns.

The product in question is the 500g Beer Pickle, a unique collaboration between Westmont Pickles and the renowned Sydney-based brewery Young Henrys. The affected batch had a best-before date of March 4, 2025.

The recall was initiated after glass fragments were discovered in jars of pickles, posing a serious health risk to consumers.

The jars are available for purchase at ALDI stores in New South Wales and Victoria and through various independent retailers, including IGA outlets in South Australia.

Glass in food products is a grave concern, as it can lead to internal injuries if ingested or external injuries if mishandled.

Consumers who purchased the Beer Pickle were advised to cease consumption immediately and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

This precautionary measure is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of customers.

FSA recommended seeking medical advice as soon as possible for those who have already consumed the product and are worried about potential health implications.

While not all jars may contain glass, the risk of harm from those that do is significant enough to warrant the recall.

Westmont Pickles provided contact information for customers concerned about the recall and seeking more details.

Consumers can also read the recall information on the Food Standards recall listing here.

This incident reminds us of the importance of food safety and the vigilance required by food producers and retailers.

It also highlights the effectiveness of the Australian food recall system, which is designed to protect consumers from potential hazards in food products.

As consumers, it is crucial to stay informed about such recalls, as they can directly impact our health and safety.

Check the best-before dates and recall notices for the products in your pantry.

Remember, your health is paramount, and no precaution is too small to ensure the safety of the food we consume.

Both companies would have been sent letters.
IGA are all independently (normally family) owned supermarkets. Most of them get their products via Metcash. Metcash would have send out literally thousands of letters to those supermarkets and it is time consuming. I worked for what is now known as Metcash for 40 years which is how I know the procedure.
