Food recalls shake consumer trust: Undisclosed allergens in popular snacks highlight safety concerns

Food safety and accurate labelling are paramount in ensuring consumer trust, especially as food allergies and intolerances become increasingly common.

Recent product recalls have highlighted the importance of vigilance in this area, underscoring the potential health risks posed by undisclosed allergens in popular grocery items.

These incidents not only disrupt consumers' confidence but also raise awareness about the critical need for stringent quality control measures in food production and distribution, affecting items like a popular snack and a widely purchased paneer dish.

One of the products in question is Leslie’s Clover Chips in the barbecue flavour, a snack many love for its crunchy texture and savoury taste.

Due to an oversight in its packaging, this snack was deemed potentially hazardous for those with gluten sensitivities.

The packets, distributed by WTT Global Trading, failed to declare the presence of gluten—an allergen that can cause serious reactions in some individuals. Consequently, Leslie’s Clover Chips in the barbecue flavour were recalled in Victoria over undeclared gluten.

The recall affected 145g packets of these corn chips, which have been stocked in numerous Asian grocery stores across Victoria.

If you have a bag in your pantry, check the best-before date: if it reads September 4, 2025, you're holding one of the recalled items.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued a warning, urging consumers with a gluten allergy or intolerance to avoid consuming the product.

The recall notice stated, ‘Any consumers who have a gluten allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed. Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.’

‘Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.’

For more information or to address concerns, customers can contact WTT Global Trading at 0490 805 433 or through their website, WTT-Global.com.

In a similar vein, if you recently purchased Indya Foods' Ashoka Palak Paneer from Woolworths, it's time to check them.

This popular product was recalled nationwide due to a serious labelling oversight.

The recall specifically targets the Ashoka Palak Paneer, which has a best-before date of June 15, 2025.

The reason behind this urgent recall was the undeclared presence of cashews in the ingredients, which poses a significant risk for those with allergies.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand stated in its recall notice, ‘Consumers who have a cashew allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed. Consumers who have a cashew allergy or intolerance should not consume this product.’

‘Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.’

If you have purchased the affected Ashoka Palak Paneer, you're entitled to a full refund. Simply return the product to your local Woolworths store.

If you require further information or have questions, Indya Foods can be contacted directly at (03) 9793 5373 or through their website.

They should be able to provide additional details regarding the recall and the steps they're taking to ensure this oversight doesn't happen again.

Oh dear! WTT Global Trading's principal is none other than Trung Tuan Tran, former director of the defunct Alvarstore Ltd, based in Cardiff, Scotland, an online clothing store which was dissolved in November 2023. From looking at their still "current" website, they possibly sell imitations of well known shoes and apparel.
