Fish and chips served in newspaper

Who doesn't adore the golden, batter-coated deliciousness of traditional fish and chips? Remember when they used to come wrapped in yesterday’s newspapers? The paper was reasonably sturdy and absorbent, and you could often get it for free or at a bargain. Ah, those were the days!

The do gooders and health specialist and any other wacko will say OH NO, imagine if the ink gets into your system etc. Plus the articles were OLD NEWS .

The best fish and chips I ever had was walking home with mum and dad and my brother from the pictures (cinema) on a cold evening in England and stopping at the fish and chip shop on the way and then eating hot chips from a little packet with newspaper around it to keep them warm. There was a layer of butcher's paper next to the chips. So far no problem with newspaper!

We used to walk home from school eating 5 pennith of chips in news paper. It was worth the walk. One day when my kids were about 7 I cooked chips and wrapped them in newspaper to show them what they were missing

Ah yes, I certainly remember fish n chips wrapped up in newspaper and enjoyed it with Mum n Dad and big sis of a Fri evening during the cool crisp winters in northern NSW...well any evening was good!Best eaten straight away or went soggy...yum!

They were good days, no chance of contamination as there was always clean white paper first as they do now.The only time I had some that tasted funny..was when they were wrapped in the JOKE PAGE.boom boom.

Our fish and chip shop was next door to the cinema. After the cinema closed you should have seen he queue out side the fish shop. They were all cooked fresh, not like today.

l remember in the UK years and years ago getting fish and chips and there was always a piece of greaseproof paper underneath. How absolutely horrible think of all the lead poisoning even at my young age then l would have never eaten this .

Vale Fish & chip shops - no option these days as most F&C shops closed. Any still open - fish of the day BASA - mud dredging fish with mud taste. Decent piece of fish now $8/10! Generally it's Maccas - all polystyrene & cardboard.

l know you can't get a decent piece of fish these days without paying through the nose Though best place to go would be the fish markets buy in bulk and freeze.l used to love haddock and plaice but can't get it here

The alternative is to go to the fisherman's co-op if you live in the vicinity of where the fisherman catch the fish. Ballina has one, or used to. Not been there for a while so not sure if it still operates.
