Fish and chips in newspaper

Have you tried eating fish and chips off of newspapers? Back in the day, this was how the all-time favourite snack was served to countless Aussies. Do you have any unforgettable memories of eating fish and chips? We’d love to read about them here.

Remember this well, I ‘m sure we had them wrapped in grease proof paper and then wrapped in newspaper. If we felt like a snack on the way home from school, we often bought sixpence worth of chips that was wrapped the same way, and tore open one end to eat & enjoy. Yummy!!

I worked in a Greek milk bar after school, I was 12 (couldn't do that today). Those days we made our own chips in a big tumbler. The fish was properly battered by the 2 men that owned the shop. Everything was wrapped in newspaper. The newspapers were leftovers from the newsagent across the street and always had a sheet of greaseproof between the food. Scollops and battered savs were all hand made. Those were some of my fondest memories where my work ethic was shaped. It's a shame some laws change, and kids are not given some responsibility a bit younger. maybe, could curb some of the youth crime. :)

I remember taking our saved up newspapers to the local fish and chip shop where they'd pay us for them. If memory serves me correctly we got about 2 cents per pound.

Where I grew up they didn't put anything between the F&C and the news paper. I remember eating chips that had an imprint of the text on them as well as the fish batter.
Of course back then we never gave it a second thought that the ink had lead in it as well as the type face.
Now that the lead is out of my system, I now need to get rid of the radiation.

I certainly do remember the fish and chips are wrapped in newspaper. I still know of one shop on the coast which serves their fish and chips in butchers paper.

It’s amazing how it always tastes better when wrap this way.
I know one in Gunnedah that does that, fish and chips in butcher's paper.

Many years ago when I was 17/20 years Young,
We would visit a shop on the Esplanade at Victor Harbour.
2 elderly Poms ran this shop him n her.
Chips were cooked from the beginning, and there was none of this double-deep frying.
They would tell you how long before taking your order.
Fish n Chips wrapped in g/p paper then newspaper and double wrapped to keep hot longer.
Absolutely Brilliant.
The best freshest and tastiest fish n chips bar NONE.
Pity that this shop ceased trading around 1985.
I really miss those fish n chips ❗ 😿😿
