When it comes to Aussie snacks and treats, one delicacy stands out from the pack: the iconic Tim Tam. From the creamy filling to the perfect blend of milk chocolate and biscuit—it's no wonder it’s beloved by many.
If you’re in the same boat, then you’ll be happy to know that over 2.8 million Aussies had a shared love affair with the Tim Tam Original according to Arnott’s Australia, making it the most purchased company product for 2023.
The company revealed that it produces Tim Tams at a rate of 60 biscuits per second—about 3000 biscuits a minute and 4.023 million each day—in order to keep up with Australia’s insatiable appetite for the much-loved Tim Tams.
‘Tim Tam Original taking out the top spot…what more could you wish for?’ said Tim Tam’s marketing manager, Rebecca Chan.
'As Australia’s favourite chocolate biscuit, and now Arnott’s number one biscuit for the year, it’s great to be finishing 2023 on such a high note, especially as we head into our 60th birthday year,' she added.
‘Whether it’s Tom Cruise, Margot Robbie or The Wiggles on a red carpet, right through to family and friends enjoying a Tim Tam Slam at home, it’s no surprise how loved this edible Aussie icon is; our factory operates 24/7 to keep up with just how big Australia’s love and passion is for the number-one biscuit.’
‘For nearly 60 years, Tim Tam has been the go-to Aussie treat for people near and far, and we’re looking forward to celebrating these moments with Tim Tam fans and saying “Here’s to you” all year long.’
The biscuit in second place is Barbecue Shapes, followed by Chicken Crimpy Shapes, Jatz Original, Pizza Shapes, Saladas, Mint Slice, Tim Tam Double Coat and Monte Carlos.
But, how did this Aussie delicacy come to be? It all started with a world trip in 1958, when Ian Norris—then Arnott's director of food technology—was in search of new ideas.
In his travels, Norris came across a chocolate-coated biscuit in Britain called Penguin. He told The Sydney Morning Herald in 2003, ‘[The Penguin] was not a bad idea for a biscuit…we’ll make a better one.’
Meanwhile, Ross Arnott named the beloved treat after the horse that won the Kentucky Derby in 1958.
‘The whole success of Tim Tams, and why it is so good, is the flavour of the crème in combination with the chocolate and the biscuit,’ Mr Norris said.
