Registered dietitian Susie Burrell warns that many Hungry Jack's burgers are packed with fat and salt, with some containing an entire day's worth of calories in one sitting!
‘In truth, there are few, if any, menu options that could be considered remotely balanced or healthy, which makes it difficult to find something that will suit your diet if the goal is weight control or to eat a balanced meal,’ Susie explained.
She listed the Hungry Jack's menu items she believed consumers should stay away from and shared the healthier options.
One of the nutrition no-nos is the Triple Whopper Cheese, which cranks in a massive 96g of fat, 1,380 calories and 2,010mg of sodium.
Susie claimed that the fat content in this burger ‘well exceeds the advised daily amount’.
Susie also advised staying away from the Triple Cheeseburger Super Stunner, which has a gut-busting 1,275 calories, 61g of fat and 1,868 sodium.
She explained: ‘This high-fat mix contains more calories than some adults will require in a day.’
The chain restaurant’s Grill Masters Double Angus Bacon and Cheese burger was also mentioned. With 1,200 calories, 77g fat and 1,500mg of sodium, consumers should ‘watch [their] cholesterol, blood pressure or heart health [in] general.’
Susie also said consumers should skip Hungry Jack’s Grill Masters Pulled Pork and Angus since it has 871 calories, 59.9g fat and 1,080mg sodium.
‘Don’t let the word grilled in the name fool you; any food that contains 60g of fat in a single serve is one to avoid,’ she stated.
‘There are a range of burgers that are much better options than this meat and sauce heavy option.’
But it's not all doom and gloom—there are slightly better choices on the menu if you're in a bind.
Susie recommended the Grilled Chicken burger (342 calories, 15.4g fat and 663mg of sodium) or a Cheeseburger (309 calories, 13.8g fat and 893mg of sodium) as the lowest calorie option. But even then, she says it's best to hold the mayo and ask for extra salad.
She also mentioned the chicken nuggets as a healthier option, saying: ‘The calories in 6 Nuggets are reasonable, just go easy with the high sugar dipping sauces.’
Depending on the diet, people should consume 45g to 75g of fat and less than 2,300mg of salt intake a day.
