Find out how this mum got her 'luxury' nails for an unbelievable price - it's not what you think!

Indulging in a little pampering is a crucial aspect of self-care and can truly transform your sense of well-being. Of course, it's important to keep in mind that pampering oneself can come with a financial cost.

We here at the SDC may not be able to help you reduce the cost of other beauty treatments like facials or massages, but thanks to this Aussie mum, you are about to find out how you can give yourself a luxury manicure from the comfort of your own home, for just $12.

The bargain hunter used a popular Kmart fake nail set for her DIY mani and used her own polish and rhinestones to finish it off.

Naturally, this news had many fans in the beauty community swooning and praising the mum for her clever beauty hack.

She shared in a popular Kmart Facebook group: 'I normally have to go to the salon but really needed to stop as it's so expensive, I gave these [the Kmart nails] a try, and they're actually quite good!'

She finished her look with a $2.25 polish and some rhinestones she already had at home. Altogether it took her just a few hours to complete, and the mani stayed in place the whole week - until she needed to take it off for work.

If you're interested in trying out the mum's DIY mani hack, there are a few things you should consider first. For one, experts warn against using super glue to apply fake nails as it can cause skin irritation.

The mum also suggests dehydrating your nails beforehand with a bit of nail polish remover just to make sure they blend seamlessly with the fake nails and have good staying power.

And, of course, nail preparation is also very important, as you must clean and file the nail before applying the set and shaping the nail so it fits well.

As one beauty fan explained: 'It takes a while to master the preparation process. Any slight residue of oil or any contaminants and the glue won't hold. If the nail doesn't completely marry to your nail bed, it also allows for it to lift.'

Here's how to properly apply your fake nails so you don't hurt yourself in the process:
  1. Wash and dry your nails and nail bed and clean your nails with acetone.
  2. Clip your nails to the finger bed and file them to shape, then push back the cuticles with a cuticle stick and buff the nail.
  3. Make sure the nails fit your natural nails before applying; if you're in between sizes, then size up. You can shape the stick-on with a nail file and clippers.
  4. Put a dot of glue on the fake nail and on the real nail.
  5. Press the fake nail just above the cuticle and press it down onto the nail bed.
  6. File the stick-on nail into shape and use a q-tip to wipe off any excess glue.

That being said, we suggest you tread with caution when playing around with fake nails from Kmart (or any other retail store). Just last month, we reported an incident involving a mum and her nine-year-old daughter.

In the concerned mum's Facebook post, she wrote of how the glue from the $5 OXX fake nails set had dripped onto her skin, burning through three layers of clothing in the process — leaving her with a permanent scar.

Several other shoppers shared similarly horrifying experiences, which is frightening to think of for those with grandchildren.
Key Takeaways

  • An Aussie mum recently tried out a $12 Kmart fake nail set and was very impressed with the result.
  • There have been reports of Kmart's $5 fake nail sets, particularly the OXX brand, causing skin burns.
Aside from the dangers of applying and wearing false nail sets, we must also warn you about the long-term effects of using them.

One issue with using fake nails is that the adhesive used to attach them to the natural nail can cause weakening or damage to the underlying nail. As the natural nail grows, the adhesive can become too thick, making it difficult to remove the fake nail without causing damage to the natural nail.

The chemicals used in many adhesive products can also be absorbed by the skin and can cause allergic reactions over time. Additionally, some adhesives contain harsh chemicals, such as formaldehyde and toluene, which can cause irritation and damage if used for a prolonged period.

Moreover, the removal of fake nails can be a tricky and expensive process, requiring either the use of strong chemicals or lots of filing and buffing, to the detriment of the natural nail.

Many nail technicians are experienced in the correct removal of nails. However, there are also many horror stories circulating about damage caused to the natural nail when the wrong process for safe removal is used.

Therefore, if one opts to use fake nails, it is important to consider the long-term effects and make sure to exercise good judgement and seek professional help when needed.

You read it here, members. It's worth being extra careful when you buy and use fake nails from Kmart. Make sure to follow the right preparation steps and level of care with any nail glue to avoid any nasty surprises.

Never tried do it yourself false nails, but my nails are not the best, so I have had falsies applied in a nail salon. They looked terrific (which was what I wanted for my son’s wedding) but when they came off, they took several layers of my (pretty awful) natural nails and the damage took months until the nails grew out completely. Not going there again! If you have halfway decent nails, by all means have a manicure, but stick with your own, don’t go the falsies would be my advice!

To my mind I have yet to see false nails look anything other than yuck. Nobody files them down to look natural, instead they are talons. the squared end ones are the worst, they are so un-natural they make me cringe. :(

Been using stick on “fake” nails for years. I’ve stuck them on in the car on the way to functions, even when on the train - anytime my own nails hare looking worse for wear after gardening or cleaning silver etc.
No problem getting them off - just washing the dishes w no gloves on and they remove easily.
Only problem is buying a decent glue to re-use them again later. One recent glue frm Priceline didn’t even work for half a day = unimpressed.

Have been wearing fake nauls for over 30 years with none of these problems.
I take my time, shape the nails carefully and naturally shaped, not talons. Often receive comments on my nice nails
No problems removing them, I just soak my hands in warm water, after I've worn them for about a week
The warm water breaks the glue down and they come off quite easily .
I don't buy my nails from KMart and I only buy good quality (expensive) glue
Good quality and patience is the secret. Much cheaper than the salon.
