A US appliance repair technician named Renae has solved one of life's greatest mysteries, revealing where our missing socks have been hiding. It turns out, there's a secret compartment in top-load washing machines that often traps smaller items, such as socks and underwear, for years on end.

Renae shared her wisdom in a now-viral video, showing a fellow repairman removing the front panel of a top loader to expose a mountain of long-lost socks. 'Yes, it's true, that is one of the places that you can lose your socks in your washing machine,' she said.

How do socks end up in this secret compartment? Renae explains that it's usually due to carelessly 'dumping all your laundry in' or 'overloading' the machine, causing smaller items to slip into the gap between the washing basket and the side metal walls. 'There's a gap in between the top of the drum and the top of where that metal is. You can actually kind of reach your hand inside of it, which is why socks can also wind up falling inside of it,' she said.

People couldn't help but feel a sense of vindication from this newfound knowledge. Reactions ranged from amused to relieved, with one person commenting, 'We all owe the dryer an apology,' while another said, 'So my washing machine DOES eat my socks.'

Loading Top-Loader Washing Machines the Right Way

If you’re using a top-loader washing machine, there are a few simple steps that you can take to ensure that your clothes come out fresh and clean without any missing socks.

Evenly Distribute Your Items

The first step is to distribute your items inside the washing machine evenly. This means that your items shouldn’t be too tightly packed and should be spread out throughout the drum. It’s also important to carefully spread out heavier items so that the spinning action is able to get the items clean.

Overloading the washing machine can lead to an uneven distribution of clothes, which can cause items to slip down into the secret compartment, leading to missing socks, lint-covered undies and other items.

Be Careful When Loading Items

It’s also important to be careful when loading items of different sizes. If the small items, such as socks and delicates, are stuck in between bigger and heavier items, the spinning action can force them down into the hidden compartment. If possible, place the smaller items in a netted bag so that they won’t be lost during the wash cycle.

Secure the Lid Properly

Finally, when closing the lid, make sure to secure it properly. If the lid is left open, the imbalance can cause heavier items to be pushed down into the hidden compartment.
