After years of watching Coles and Woolworths drivers zoom past with grocery deliveries, ALDI shoppers across Australia can finally join the party.

The German discount giant has officially rolled out delivery to all mainland states, with New South Wales becoming the final state to welcome the grocer onto its DoorDash systems, following WA, SA and QLD, making delivery now available from most ALDI locations nationwide.

But before you start planning your couch-based shopping sprees, there are a few important details worth knowing—especially if you're watching your budget closely.

The rollout that's been years in the making

ALDI Australia is partnering with DoorDash to trial its FIRST EVER grocery delivery service, something customers have been requesting for years.

The service began as a trial in Canberra in July 2025, then gradually expanded through Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, and Victoria before finally reaching NSW in September 2025.

Over 1800 products are now available (at the grocer brand's signature low prices) at the click of a button, covering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to meat, seafood, dairy, bread, and household essentials.

'We can now literally deliver on this mission directly to Aussies' doorsteps in an exciting new way that we know our customers have been seeking'

Jordan Lack, ALDI Australia Chief Commercial Officer

The catch that ALDI lovers need to know

Here's the disappointing news for bargain hunters: there's a catch (of course there is). ALDI's famous Special Buys—those middle-aisle treasures that range from snow gear to garden tools—won't be available for delivery. You'll still need to venture in-store to snag those weekly surprises that make ALDI shopping such an adventure.

The reasoning is practical: it's quite a challenge to ask a delivery driver to fit a weighted blanket and two metres of Christmas lights into one of those paper bags alongside your groceries.

What it'll cost you—the real breakdown

Let's talk numbers, because this is where things get interesting for budget-conscious shoppers.

Current DoorDash delivery costs in Australia

Standard delivery fee: A$3.99 per order

Service fees: Variable (typically $1-3)

Optional tip for driver: Your choice

DashPass subscription: $9.99/month or $96/year (eliminates delivery fees on eligible orders)

While ALDI is renowned for its low prices, the grocery delivery service may come with some cost differences. The retailer has confirmed that prices may vary between the app and in-store shopping. This means your usual $2 loaf of bread might cost $2.50 through the app.

One Reddit user who trialled the service noted that 'any savings by shopping at ALDI will be lost with the markup and fees', though another found ALDI prices via DoorDash are lower than Coles items on DoorDash.

How it stacks up against the big two

Unlike Coles and Woolworths, which run their own delivery services alongside third-party partnerships, ALDI has gone all-in with DoorDash. This means:

  • No Uber Eats option: Unlike other major supermarkets, Aldi is exclusively on DoorDash
  • No subscription required: You can order without DashPass, though you'll pay delivery fees
  • Smaller order focus: DoorDash is also more suited to smaller grocery deliveries rather than larger, weekly orders customers typically place via Coles, Woolworths and IGA websites

Smart ordering strategies for seniors

  • Consider DashPass if you plan to order more than twice monthly

  • Combine orders with nearby friends to split delivery costs

  • Focus on heavy items you'd struggle to carry (milk, potatoes, cleaning products)

  • Compare total costs with your usual grocery budget before committing

Getting started—a step-by-step guide

If you're ready to give it a try, here's how to get started:

  • Download the DoorDash app from your phone's app store, or visit www.doordash.com.au on your computer
  • Enter your address to see if Aldi delivery is available in your area
  • Browse the available products - you'll find over 1,800 items to choose from
  • Add items to your cart and review your order carefully
  • Choose delivery or pickup - you can even schedule a delivery for later
  • Pay securely using your preferred payment method

The average time is approximately 40 minutes, but it could be more or less, depending on factors like distance, traffic, and weather conditions.

What people are actually ordering

Early data from the service reveals some interesting patterns. Fresh produce, milk and eggs via DoorDash, with items from these categories accounting for about a quarter of all ALDI orders nationally.

Weekend orders are particularly popular, with a third of ALDI DoorDash orders placed on the weekend.

Interestingly, Canberra shoppers have developed quite a sweet tooth, with chocolate wafers proving particularly popular, while other states favour savoury snacks.

Money-saving strategies

If you're thinking about regular use, here are some ways to make the numbers work in your favour:

Consider the DashPass option: If you order takeout frequently, signing up for the DashPass program can save you money. Members of the program qualify for $0 delivery fees on orders of $12 or more from many restaurants. At $9.99 per month, you'd break even after three deliveries.

Look for special offers: if you're the proud owner of a Prime Video subscription, link it to your DoorDash account and you'll get a year of $0 delivery fees and more.

Group your shopping: Instead of multiple small orders, plan larger shops to make the delivery fee worthwhile.

Did you know?

Did you know?
Students and seniors can often access discounted DashPass subscriptions. Student memberships are available for $4.99 per month, and some credit card providers offer complimentary DashPass memberships as a cardholder benefit.

The bigger picture

After years of resisting delivery services to maintain its low-cost business model, the German discount giant now aims to match competitors Woolworths and Coles in the convenience space, bringing groceries directly to customers' doorsteps.

For many seniors, particularly those with mobility challenges or those who simply prefer the convenience of home delivery, this expansion represents a significant improvement in accessibility to affordable groceries.

The service marks a significant shift for a company that has traditionally focused on in-store efficiency and cost-cutting.

As ALDIAustralia continues to evolve, this major shift in how Aussies shop shows the brand is willing to adapt to modern needs while sticking to its core value: keeping groceries affordable.

What This Means For You

While you might pay a premium for the convenience, the ability to have quality groceries delivered to your door—especially during busy periods or when mobility is challenging—could well be worth the extra cost for many Australian seniors.

Have you tried ALDI's new delivery service yet? We'd love to hear about your experience—did the convenience justify the extra costs, and how did the quality of fresh items hold up during delivery?
