Favourite snack vanishes from supermarket shelves amid supply shake-up

If you've recently walked through the snack section and noticed something missing, you're not imagining things.

A once-popular crunchy favourite has disappeared without much warning, leaving loyal snackers feeling a bit let down.

The quiet exit has sparked disappointment among those who had come to rely on it for their go-to treat. Many now wonder if it’s gone for good or just taking a break.

The disappearance was first noticed by eagle-eyed shoppers on social media, Reddit, with one particularly devastated chip lover lamenting, ‘Didn’t even get a chance to stock up!’

The absence wasn’t due to a product recall or safety issue, but rather a business decision by the major supermarkets.

According to the original post, ‘Woolworths, Coles and IGA have stopped stocking these. Gone from their shelves without warning or even clearance tags.’

So, what happened? The makers of Tyrrell’s, Snack Brands, confirmed that the decision came down to ‘insufficient levels of consumer demand’.

In a statement, a spokesperson explained, ‘We always aim to bring delicious snacks to our consumers in line with their needs. However, we sadly had to retire the Tyrrells brand from the market due to insufficient consumer demand. We realise that there will always be true lovers of the brand out there, but we need to balance the requirements of our consumers as well as our retail partners when making these tough decisions.’

This is a real blow for those of us who have been loyal to Tyrrell’s—especially the cheddar and chive or the much-missed sweet chilli flavour.

Many fans took to social media to share their disappointment, with comments like, ‘Damn, that’s really disappointing. They were the best chips on the shelves,’ and ‘Noooo cheese flavour Tyrells were the only potato chip I bought.’

For those who may not know, Tyrrell’s originated in Herefordshire, England, and made its way to Australia in 2016, with manufacturing moving to the Yarra Valley in Victoria.

This was the first time the iconic crisps were produced outside the UK, and for a while, they became a staple in Aussie pantries, especially for those who appreciate a chip with a bit of character.

But as with many things, change is inevitable. Some fans noticed a difference in taste and texture after the move to local manufacturing, and others were disappointed when their favourite flavours were discontinued or the chips switched to a crinkle cut style.

As one Redditor put it, ‘Love Tyrell’s, best chips by far, though I liked them better when they weren’t crinkle cut. Probably going to get crucified, but they were also better when they were UK made.’

All hope is not lost for die-hard Tyrrell’s fans. While the chips have disappeared from the big supermarkets, you might still spot them at Harris Farm outlets, some IGAs, 7-Elevens, or The Reject Shop.

A few resourceful snackers have even managed to order them online via Amazon. And if you’re really desperate, generous souls on Reddit are offering to post packs to fellow fans!

Snack Brands also mentioned that they continue to innovate under their Kettle and Natural Chip Company brands, so you might find a new favourite among their offerings.

Red Rock Deli and Kettle were both mentioned as possible alternatives by fans, and of course, Coles and Woolies have their own premium chip ranges if you’re feeling adventurous.

It’s always a bit of a mystery when a much-loved product disappears, but the reality is that supermarket shelf space is fiercely competitive.

If a product isn’t selling as well as others or doesn’t fit into the retailer’s broader strategy, it can be quietly dropped, even if it has a loyal following. Sometimes, it’s about profit margins, supplier negotiations, or making room for new products.

For those of us who have seen our favourite snacks come and go over the years, it’s a reminder to enjoy them while we can, and maybe even stock up when we notice they’re on special!

While it’s sad to say goodbye to Tyrrell’s at the big supermarkets, the world of snacks is always evolving.

Who knows, maybe a new, even tastier chip is just around the corner? In the meantime, it’s worth exploring some of the other artisan and local brands popping up in independent grocers and markets. You might just discover a new favourite.
