The Mamas & the Papas was co-founded by Michelle, John Phillips, and Canadian musician Denny Doherty, with Cass Elliot being the last to join.
Their song ‘Monday, Monday’ won them a Grammy Award in 1967 for Best Contemporary (R&R) Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.
In an interview, Michelle reflected on her time in the band.
When asked what she missed about the group, she responded: ‘Nothing. I have such a wonderful life today.’
She added: ‘I live in a house that I’ve lived in for years. I bought this house in 1978 and I’ve just improved it and improved. I just put a brand new Tiki bar in the backyard. It’s so cool. It’s a beautiful old Mexican house. I have two great dogs.’
Despite her pride in the band’s legacy, she made it clear she had no desire to relive that era, stating, ‘I would not want to be doing The Mamas & the Papas anymore. But you know what? I am very proud of what we accomplished and I have no regrets about it.’
She continued: ‘I only have wonderful feelings about the group and what it taught me ’cause I learned a lot in that small journey. But I wouldn’t want to be there now.’
Michelle also spoke about the band’s close-knit dynamic, saying: ‘Well, we were all living together and there was a very close relationship between the four of us.’
