Famous actor found guilty of serious charges impacting his career

In a landmark decision that’s sent shockwaves through the French film industry and beyond, the legendary actor has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two women on a film set.

The Paris court handed the 76-year-old star an 18-month suspended sentence, marking one of the most high-profile #MeToo cases to reach the French legal system.

For many Australians, Gerard Depardieu is a familiar face—his roles in classics like Green Card, The Last Metro, and Cyrano de Bergerac have made him a household name across the globe.

He's been celebrated as one of France's greatest actors over a career spanning more than five decades and 200 films.

But this week, the spotlight turned to a much darker chapter.

The court found that Depardieu had sexually assaulted two women during a film shoot in 2021.

One of the victims, Amelie K, a set decorator now aged 54, bravely recounted how Depardieu groped her and made explicit comments, leaving her 'terrified' while he 'laughed'.

The judge, Thierry Donard, was scathing in his assessment, stating that Depardieu 'does not seem to have grasped either the concept of consent or the deleterious and traumatic consequences of his behaviour towards the women he assaulted.'

Depardieu, who was not present in court for the verdict, has been ordered to be placed on the official list of sex offenders in France.

This case has become a flashpoint in France’s ongoing debate about sexual violence, consent, and the #MeToo movement.

While the movement has gained significant traction in countries like the United States and Australia, France has been slower in embracing the same level of public reckoning.

However, attitudes are shifting, with more women coming forward and the public conversation growing louder.

The trial also exposed a generational divide. Some prominent French figures, including former first lady Carla Bruni and actress Brigitte Bardot, have publicly defended Depardieu, calling the backlash a 'lynching' and lamenting that 'those who have talent and grope a girl get thrown into the gutter.'

These comments have sparked outrage among women’s rights advocates, who argue that talent should never excuse harmful behaviour.

Depardieu’s legal troubles may not be over. Prosecutors are considering a separate rape trial following allegations by actress Charlotte Arnould, who said she could no longer remain silent.

In total, more than a dozen women have accused Depardieu of sexual violence, though not all have filed formal complaints.

Depardieu has consistently denied all wrongdoing, writing in an open letter last year: 'Never, absolutely never, have I abused a woman.'

For many, this verdict represents a turning point. Amelie K, one of the women at the centre of the case, told reporters: 'It’s truly a victory and a step forward. We’re making progress.'

The Depardieu case is a stark reminder that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful.

It also highlights the importance of listening to survivors and supporting those who come forward.

In Australia, we’ve seen our own #MeToo moments, and cases like this reinforce the need for ongoing vigilance and cultural change.

In other news, famous author Neil Gaiman faces accusations of raping his son's nanny, Scarlett Pavlovich, in an outdoor bathtub at his New Zealand home, as reported by Vulture.

Further allegations from other women have surfaced, accusing Gaiman of sexual assault and aggressive behaviour, with some claims dating back to 1986. You can read more about it here.

This particular young woman should have been punished as what she did to you was terrible. The problem is that many rich, influential men think that they can get away with almost everything, & that is definitely not okay. For way too many years women have been raped & assaulted & if they were brave enough to go to the police, & have been left traumatised because nobody believed them. I think this is why Me Too came about, but maybe it’s gone too far, women saying they were sexually abused but didn’t realise, which I find hard to believe. False reporting makes it so much harder for woman who really were abused. It’s the same with domestic violence, it must be so hard for men to come forward to make a report. We had a case before the courts last year, in Launceston & she was found guilty
Cheer up veggie, a lot of us would agree that your accuser was an appalling person.
The thing about me is that if a event happens to me, the impact, unless physical and visible in nature, lasts less than a day. But it NEVER leaves my memory.

The event I previously referred to, occurred in early 1997, before the birth of my third and last child. The then missus woke me up to say "someone's at the door wanting to see you". The weird thing is that the detectives would have no clue where I was or what I was doing at 2 am of that morning. Unless I was stalked. o_O

The world is changing and it's been well over due. For many years people have done indecent acts and got away with it. The more famous one is.l think people are to scared to come forward and put in a complaint for fear they may not be believed. Anyone who has been indecently assaulted should be believed and have their story heard.
No one is above the law.
Kind regards to all Vicki
It has to be genuine. Too many females are accusing young males of assault. they scream if someone touches any part of their body.

With a busted bucket for a head and a body like a puffer fish, how could ANY woman consider him to be worthy of their company?

The guy was a pig in his film roles which have now spilled over into his private and public life.

Allegedly....
some will fall for anything. no taste at all. I AM not A FAN OF THE Me Too OUTFIT. i REMEMBER Madona and her stupid hat 2016.

I was accused of sexual assault many years ago by a little 20 year old whore who accused me of forcing her to perform oral sex. Great fun being woken up at 7 am on a Sunday morning by two detectives who were looking for alleged "bite marks" on the old fella. Obviously, none were found.

As it eventuated, this bitch had made no more than eight false claims of sexual assault in the past. Now I ask, why wasn't SHE locked up?
Was she found to have a mental illness?

I’m sure the trauma never leaves you, unfortunately. Hopefully you’re doing okay now, with Deb’s help.

I was once accused of raping a 5yo girl who was a housemates daughter. Yes, that serious and even her mother was horrified of the accusations. It was all sorted out by a phone call with detectives. It was the mothers jealous boyfriend who told the Police.
It's not fun being accused of something not done.

When a person knows in his or her own mind that they have not committed an offence, all is good.

At Ringwood Court in October 2015, I faced an attempted murder and use of a controlled weapon conviction. I represented myself.

The hearing lasted less than five minutes when the magistrate declared that the attending police and the plaintiff had colluded to fabricate evidence against me. The plaintiff was armed with a one metre steel bar while I had a measly Stanley knife.

You don't take a Stanley knife to a bar brawl.... 😁

Oh Veggiepatch, that is dreadful. I have always said the cruelest thing you can acusse a man of is sexual assault if the man is innocent. I don't understand why some women do this. This can ruin a mans life to the point he could harm himself. Don't blame anyone for such a dreadful crime unless it's true.
I am truly sorry you and your family had to go through that.
I agree with others opinions that in some cases it has gone to far and over the top.
Also why is it that it takes many years for one to remember. A sexual assault never leaves one.
Keep your chin up Veggiepatch even though I don't know you personally l believe you did not do what you were accused of. You are a genuine person.
Kind regards Vicki

As they say, it's just water under the bridge.

It is in my memory but forgotten in a couple of days. It's just only when articles like this that the memory is rekindled.

Thank you @BellaB18! ❤️
