Who still remembers the days of family-run hardware stores? The smell of timber, rows of little drawers packed with screws and nails, and a friendly face behind the counter who knew exactly what you needed before you even asked. Did you or someone in your family ever run one? Share your memories here.

When I was a child there were no large hardware chain stores like now. I can remember going in to our local store and Dad could purchase however many nails or screws he needed and not having to buy huge packets that he didn't really want.

I grew up in Mitchelton, Brisbane in the 50’s and 60’s. Our little hardware was a beaut. I can still remember the guy who runt,Bob, whether he owned it or run it, was irrelevant. Top fella, who always knew what you wanted, even when you didn’t. Couldn’t have wished for better.
