Fact of the Day: The world's first sewing machine
Ah, the sewing machine—a seamstress’s best friend when it comes to clothing.
While today’s machines are equipped with modern tools and features, the first sewing machine took decades of development before it was revealed to the public! How long did it take for inventors, you reckon?
Englishman Thomas Saint designed the first sewing machine of its kind in 1790. The patent showed a machine powered with a hand crank that could be used for leather and canvas.
Variations of the sewing machine were created in the 19th century, but had major roadblocks along the way.
In 1830, French tailor Barthelemy Thimonnier invented a sewing machine that used a hooked needle and one thread, creating a chain stitch, deemed the first successful sewing machine.
Overall, the first sewing machine took 40 years of development.
