Fact of the day: The town that was built on a meteor crater
Tucked away in Bavaria, Germany, there’s a medieval town that looks like something out of a fairytale—but its foundation is truly out of this world. Nördlingen sits entirely inside a giant meteor crater, 25 km across, formed 14.5 million years ago. Even more incredible? The impact left behind millions of tiny diamonds, which are now built right into the town’s walls and church tower.

More than 20,000 people call Nördlingen home today, strolling medieval streets literally sparkling with cosmic history. The crater, known as the Nördlinger Ries, was created when a meteor a mile wide slammed into Earth. For centuries, locals had no idea they lived in a celestial scar—or that their buildings glittered with diamonds—until scientists uncovered the truth in the 1960s. It’s a perfect blend of earthly charm, cosmic wonder, and hidden treasure.
