Fact of the Day: The first animal to be cloned
Dolly the sheep was the first animal to be successfully cloned in 1996. This groundbreaking scientific achievement opened new possibilities in genetics and medicine. She was cloned from a mammary gland cell using a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer, and her birth proved that specialized cells could be used to create an exact genetic copy of an adult mammal. Dolly lived at the Roslin Institute in Scotland and gave birth to six healthy lambs over her lifetime. Although she was euthanized at the age of six due to a progressive lung disease, scientists found no evidence that cloning had shortened her lifespan. Dolly's creation sparked global debate over the ethics of cloning and continues to influence scientific research today. Curious to learn more about how Dolly changed science forever?
