Fact of the Day: The East Australian Current is real

The East Australian Current (EAC) is a true underwater superhighway 🌊 — a fast-moving, warm ocean current that flows down the east coast of Australia. It carries a mind-blowing 30 million cubic meters of water every second at speeds up to 7 km/h, stretching up to 100 km wide and 1.5 km deep!

Every summer, this current sweeps thousands of tropical fish from the Great Barrier Reef all the way down to Sydney Harbour (and beyond!) — just like in Finding Nemo.

But there’s a twist: climate change is supercharging the EAC, pushing warm waters 350 km further south than 60 years ago. While the current helps marine life travel, many of these 'accidental tourists' can’t survive the colder waters in winter. So yes, Finding Nemo got a lot right—the East Australian Current isn’t just real, it’s crucial to ocean life.
