Fact of the Day: Spider silk is stronger than steel
It may be thinner than a human hair and lighter than cotton, but spider silk is five times stronger than steel of the same size — and it’s incredibly stretchy, too! While only half of all spiders spin webs, every spider makes silk, and humans have found clever uses for it over the years — from ancient Greek bandages to modern military body armour. So next time you spot a spider, try not to squish your new eight-legged engineer!
